What on earth?! I am walking around earlier this evening and see the extremely yappy dog which lives in a nearby house walking around outside. It growls at me and I go the other way.
Later I decide to walk my neighbors Schnauzer. The dog in question (a small poodle) is still out and it comes after the schnauzer!
I go and knock at the supposed owners place. I tell her her dog is apparently out and it attacked another dog(no bites or injuries though).
Silence. I say I will call the Animal League (though they aren’t open, it being a holiday). She says “Let em take him.”
 You don’t just throw your dog out if you don’t want it!
I called the police and they don’t have an animal unit, so they said they would send someone to talk to the owner. Damn!
Sadly, the poor pet sounds like it would stand more of a chance even at the pound then it would with someone who cares so little about its well-being. :smack:
I just don’t get why anyone has animals that doesn’t really and truly want them. Good on you for calling the police. Maybe they can talk some sense into her. Although I’m not very optimistic.
I never understood it either. Every dog or cat I had in the past 30 years was someone else’s throw-away. I’ve never regretted taking in any of them.
I don’t either. There are many dogs just in our neighborhood who are mostly left in their backyards 24/7. I can’t say that they’re mistreated, but what’s the point in HAVING a dog if you’re just gonna leave it outside all the time and rarely, if ever, do anything with it? Note that our neighborhood is not known for its crime so the watchdog excuse doesn’t hold water - most of these dogs are pretty attention-starved anyway so I doubt they’d mind an intrusion. You gonna play with me, dude? Cool!
Yes, our dog is spoiled rotten (two walks a day, frequent visits to the park, sleeps in the bed).
Don’t even get me started on this topic.
I helped place a wonderful showdog earlier this year - a dog with extensive training in agility, obedience, conformation and therapy. We’d been promised he’d have a loving home. The home in question decided to give him up because they had no time for him. Fair enough. Talked to our breed’s rescue organisation’s coordinator in their area and got them involved so the dog wouldn’t end up in the pound or something like that. I wasn’t prepared for what we found, though.
Now rescue’s got him, thankfully, and is putting him in an approved, screened home. He is currently being fostered. In the 6 months or so he was in this home, he put on 25 pounds (on a 50 pound, top condition show dog, that’s scary), wasn’t played with at all, wasn’t walked or exercised, or worked with. He was a total nervous wreck… his nails were over 1" too long, there was shit matted in his coat. He had some bladder trouble because he wasn’t drinking enough water. His new “owner” didn’t even know if he knew any tricks, or if he had favourite toys. This was a dog who was totally addicted to his favourite blinky ball - and I know it was sent with him when he went there this summer.
I mean - if you’re going to take a dog and give him or her a home, aren’t you at least going to walk it a few times a day? Even if it’s just 15 minutes of time you spend together twice a day? Hello? Some people would KILL for a dog like this - fully trained, stunning, loving, wonderful animal… who, before he was neutered, sired therapy and service dogs, for fuck’s sake! Gah.
