DOOM - any suggestions for a current replacement

I’m visiting the US soon, and wanna buy one or two shoot em up computer games. Don’t have to be the latest 'cause I’m 3 years out of date.

I loved Doom, like Duke Nukem. Anything more recent out there in the genre I should pick up?

I really liked Half Life, anything better but in the same vein?

I suggest Hoyle Card Games.

Just kidding. Red Faction looks cool, I’m not sure if it’s out yet though. You can literally destroy everything, even walls and floors. Can’t find a passcode for a door? Make a new door with a rocket launcher!

You should tell us what type of CPU and graphics card you have.

Also, if you can’t find this thread again, it was probably moved from “General Questions” to “In My Humble Opinion” or possibly “MPSIMS”.

Hi China Guy,

If you have a fast computer (at least a PIII-500) I would definitely recommend DeusEx.

Yeah, this is pretty much a matter of opinion, of course, so I’ll shoot (heh) it over to IMHO for you.

If you could give your CPU, RAM and Video card specs it would be helpful, as things have changed alot in game requirements over the last 3 yrs…

Here are my recommendations (assuming system capacity)

Half-Life w/ Team Fortress Classic 2 multiplayer mod. This will download automatically if you try to connect to a half-life server if you do not have the current TFC build.
IMHO Team Fortress is the best Multiplayer game around, multiple classes with unique abilties and good team-oriented maps

Soldier of Fortune WAY violent and Way enjoyable

Tribes 2, like TFC

Enjoy-BMoK

try “serious sam”. basically, the straightforwardness, gore and wonderful simplicity of doom, with nice, modern 3D graphics. an update of a classic formula.

or, if you like soldier-sim realism, try “operation flashpoint”.

I, too, will recommend Serious Sam. The levels are HUGE, the guns are awesome (the best minigun EVER in a computer game), and you blow lotsa stuff up. And I mean LOTS of stuff. The body count at the end of each level exceeds the total body count in an entire episode of Doom.

Deus Ex is also amazing, but, unfortunately, it’s been VERY glitchy on all three of the machines we have at home. We probably need to fiddle around with something or other to get it to work…

If you liked Half-Life, then you should also pick upBlue Shift. It’s an expansion pack (and it also comes with Opposing Forces, another expansion pack) that features a whole new single-player campaign, AND promises to upgrade the graphics of ALL your Half-Life games.

If you can still find it, I would HIGHLY recommend picking up Unreal Gold. It should run around ten bucks. It’s older than some other games, but it’s VERY fun to play.

Also, if you really liked Doom (as I did), you can download - for free - Doom Legacy. It upgrades the graphics and playability of Doom considerably (you can JUMP! And look UP and DOWN!! Amazing!!). It makes the Doom experience far more enjoyable.

Finally… Doom 3 is in the works. Keep an eye out for it.

Can’t believe that nobody has suggested Unreal Tournament yet. Great multiplayer. Smart bots for single-player. No story to speak of, but great gameplay.

For a great story and gameplay, try System Shock 2. It’s a little older and you can probably find it for a good price.

Another suggestion: come back in 3 more years and buy Duke Nukem Forever, it should be coming out around then.

I’ve got the following config

Pentium III processor
128 mb ram

Not sure what kind of graphics card I have as it’s my home PC, but I was able to play Decent 3 no problem.

thanks

Another vote for Serious Sam here. I got it a few days ago, and it is my favorite game already. Well, except for Baldur’s Gate II.

Rogue Spear is a great highly realistic squad-based game. The planning phase of an assault is almost as fun as getting to put a few holes into the terrorists during the actual attack.

Gotta second the votes for Serious Sam and Team Fortress Classic 2. Excellent games.

Good hunting.

Unreal Tournament all the way.
Great AI for bots.
Not much of a story for one player game, merely increasingly difficult challenges/ shoot em ups. But then I usually find video game plot-lines pretty annoying and tedious anyways.
And for on-line multiplayer, it’s tops as well.

I third Serious Sam.

Tribes is cool, although Tribes 2 needs a monster machine to run it, so I’d stick with good old vanilla Tribes.

Get Halflife if you don’t have it. TFC, Firearms, and Frontline Force are all great mods for multiplay. Get They Hunger for single player fun.

Get Rouge Spear and the addon packs for it if you want a little “glock glock” fun.

If your comp is anemic, you might see if you can find a copy of Lucasarts Outlaws, the western shooter. Great setting and amazing soundtrack. And the first Sniper Rifle in any shooter.

See you, Space Cowboy . . .

Deus Ex is great.

But for goodness’ sake buy and enjoy Quake II. It’s far in the past now but you’ll have a great old blast.

I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned Diablo II… it’s not a first-person shooter, but it’s an amazingly great game (and, coming from a guy who’d rather play Q3 or Counterstrike than have sex, that’s saying a lot).

I recommend Zork by Infocom. You can legally download it for free off the Web.
