DOOM - any suggestions for a current replacement

Actually, it’s not bad over 56K, as long as it’s a direct connection to the IP of a friend with broadband.

Battle.Net is hopeless for it, though.

I did hit your links. Those same variants can apply to D2 as well, so why limit them to D1? Other than the fact you prefer D1.

Nope, BNet can go both ways. Blizzard just hasn’t said much about using open characters. And yes, I have been on BNet with a 56K. Lag wasn’t much of a problem because I wasn’t playing as part of a large group.

I have truly seen everything now. People debating about which Diablo game is more “strategic”. What’s next? Arguing about the educational merits of the WWF vs the WCW?

Try the old tried and true Postal.

I also chime in with Serious Sam - just got the demo. Woo hoo!

Pity you don’t have a Macintosh or I’d highly recommend the three Marathon games.

And if you can find it - Alien Vs. Predator. FREAKY, but a great game.

Uh… are you SURE you’ve played Diablo 2? Because it sounds like you’re describing the first one here.

So are you suggesting that “actual strategy” doesn’t come into play with Diablo II? Jeezum Crow, I am REALLY doubting that you’ve ever played the game beyond the first quest.

So… your definition of strategy is to NOT use the items or spells that you come across in the course of the game.

You ARE aware that you can choose to not equip items or cast spells in D2, as well, right?

I did NOT say that. I added graphics quality as just ONE of MANY things that Blizzard improved upon. In addition to the better graphics, there are MORE effects in the game, resulting in a much more diverse environment.

Better story? It’s the SAME story. Just continued. That’s like saying “A New Hope had a better story than Return Of The Jedi”.

Better music? Sounds like the same quality of music to me. Just because it’s DIFFERENT… heck, they even use some of the same music in Diablo 2.

Much more difficult? This is open to debate. Sure, there was less diversity in control, but to me, the difficulty of the game seemed to rely entirely on your luck in finding items. A single Ring Of The Zodiac can mean the difference between “suckiness” and “excellent”.

And what faults would those be, hmm? The ability to - gasp! - run? Or maybe - gasp! - a different means of acquiring skills and abilities? Or maybe - gasp! - the mana regeneration?

::sigh:: And you think there aren’t mods for Diablo 2?

Just about EVERYTHING beyond Normal mode. Hell, a single Fallen is dangerous on Hell mode.

Munch, I am seriously doubting that you’ve played Diablo II for any significant amount of time.

::grumble grumble:: Damn fanatics… ::grumble grumble::

Wow.
I didn’t look at this thread for a few days. I decided to check to maybe get some ideas for a new game to play and find I’ve walked into some kind of Diablo II fanboy deathmatch.

At least no one brought up Baldur’s Gate II and how much better it is than Diablo II. [sub]Oops[/sub]

Put me squarely in the camp that believes Diablo2 is a better game than Diablo1. Having played both extensively, I found D2 to be much tougher, therefore requiring more “strategy” and thinking to plan my attack, especially when bosses are involved. Of course, all of this is contigent on being in Hell mode, as almost any strategy will suffice for Normal and most of Nightmare.

Either game should serve as an adequate Doom replacement. But generally speaking, computer games are just the opposite of Hollywood – the sequel is almost always better than the original.

FTR, once I finish my current games, I’ll try to adapt those variants to D2 rules.

And stay away from Wizards & Warriors like it’s the plague! Three years in development and they couldn’t find a better interface? Ridiculous! Glad I bought it from a store that accepts returns.

Team Fortress 2 is out WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Lord of Destruction, the Diablo II expansion, owns btw. If you enjoyed Diablo II at all this pack can only improve your enjoyment. (A word of warning, Act V has a monster that will make you beg to go back to Kurast and fight Fetishes.)

Re: The Debate, I really never got into Diablo I when it was new and only played it at all as sort of a retro-kick I got on late last year. Eh . . . it was decent, but I wouldn’t say harder. It had a different sort of challenge.

Planning your skill points in Diablo II, in my opinion, is a real challenge.
