Doom! Doom, I say! And Doom II. (Games)

Now, I know I’m not the only one still playing this game. A search turned up a thread or two from over a year ago, but since my searching skills aren’t very well developed, it’s possible I’ve missed more recent ones.

Anyway, assuming you still play Doom II… The one thing I’ve never, ever done is play it in Deathmatch mode. Honestly. No, I’m not kidding! Stop looking at me like that. Seriously. C’mon.

I have Doom II and Maximum Doom. I’ve played every WAD in there. Yes, I know I could download some more from the Net, but most of them seem to be only one level long, and to download one large file that’s only gonna be amusing for a day (and at a slow modem speed!) isn’t gonna work for me.

So, two questions, in your opinion:

  1. Are there any products out there like Maximum Doom that contain many, many WADs, some multilevel, all in one location (CD)?

  2. Where can I find someone to Deathmatch me, and what do I need to do so? Just a modem and Doom II?

I know there are many, many places online where one can find Doom information, but I haven’t found any that were very useful. I’ve seen sites that offer shareware WADs, but not to the extent that Maximum Doom does. Usually one WAD at a time, and even so, there’s that time/speed factor). Also, it’s been tough to just find someone to Deathmatch with - you have to read through all kinds of other glop just to get to what you want. Probably nothing if you’re really, really into the game, but if you’re a casual fan, it’s a big pile of glop.

Comments? And, of course, if anyone knows of a good site to download shareware or freeware Doom WADs, please let me know. (NO PIRATED SITES!)

Thanks.

Two mega-wads come to mind, Eternal Doom and Momenti Mori (Momento Mori?) "Moment of Death.

I, too prefer team play. The M16 patch is pretty cool, the chain gun becomes an M-16, and you get a semi-automatic shotgun.

Been a long time, but the three greatest wads I ever played were satan.wad (which you must complete without saving), raven.wad, and hoover.wad . If you somehow missed any of those three, take a look for 'em.

I haven’t played in ages. Might have to reinstall Doom II and give it another go, now that I have a decent system to run it on.

I still play Doom quite a bit. It’s pretty easy on the system requirements, so it’s a good thing to play when I’ve got something else on the burner, like a download.

Good place to go is doomworld.com for info on source ports and what-not. Best source port is zdoom, which you can get at zdoom.notgod.com (IIRC). Adds things like higher resolutions, free look (look up, look down, etc), jumping, internet play, and a heck of a lot else. Jdoom is also fun–adds d3d support and a HELL of a lot eye candy–it also has free look, higher resolutions, etc, just not as much cool stuff as zdoom does.

Another thing to monkey with is SLIGE, a random Doom level generator. Can’t remember the URL, but you can find it linked at doomworld.com. I have it set up on a batch file to automaticaly make a 4 level wad with a boss arena at the end. The levels it produces are surprisingly good. Try THAT with Quake 2.

My favorite current wad maker is Laz Rojas, who does uber-cool conversions of wolfenstein 3d type things to the Doom engine. These things are jaw-droppingly cool. Now if only he’d get around to changing the soundtrack, too. I belief you can get at WolfenDoom, again linked through Doomworld. I’d recommend downloading a few at a time–his earlier maps are just straight conversions and relatively boring. In his later maps, he takes full advantage of the Doom engine so you can do things like jump up on tables or shoot out windows. Anyway, some of his map packs are pretty long, but they’re all pretty good.

Thanks for all the help, guys! When I get home from work, I’ll give some of those sites a whirl. I love this game! I know it’s outdated and all, but I enjoy the familiarity a little bit. Plus simplicity has its virtue, too - I don’t need to press seven buttons to do one thing, etc.

Thanks again!

I do! In fact, my sister just gave me all her Doom CDs…4 of 'em, including the game itself. And the official strategy guide book!

Don’t worry bout pirate sites. ID Software explicitly permits add-on levels, turns a blind eye to .exe mods, and even released the DOOM source code so all DOOM hacks (Boom, Zdoom, MBF) are legal as well. The only levels you must pay for are Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Master Levels for Doom, and Final Doom. Everything else is free off the 'Net.

http://www.doomworld.com is the place to start. The file repository used to be at ftp://www.cdrom.com but it moved and I haven’t bothered to see where it went. Doomworld will have it, I’m sure.

The wads you MUST check out are: Eternal Doom (best ever made), Memento Mori I & II, Requiem, Icarus, and Hell Revealed (you’ll need God Mode for that last one!!!) Be sure to check out the LMPs (demos) as well. Totally crazy shit.

Never played deathmatch?? Man, that’s a deprived life…

J.E.T.

Ahhh, Doom. I’ll be fondly remembering it on my deathbed. The bag of marbles sound of the imps. The chainsaw revving up as you ram it down the snout of a charging hyperpig. That first time hearing the barons at the end of episodes 1 screaming as they emerge. Ahhh, Doom, my old friend.

If your system has sufficient horsepower, I strongly recommend Serious Sam for much the same feel–hordes and hordes of stods getting the smackdown. And as someone who never went in for much deathmatching and who missed playing coop Doom over the modem with like-minded friends–Sam has coop play. Life is good.

What is Serious Sam?
