Doonesbury 4/23/06: Throw away Characters?

Here’s the link, which might only be good for today: here

I don’t think we’ve ever seen these two before, but I can’t remember Trudeau using “throw away”, single strip characters before.

Am I misremembering, and this couple has been in a previous strip? Does Doonesbury in fact use throw away characters from time to time and I just missed it (I only read semi-regularly)? Is this something new for Trudeau?

Struck me as odd, anyways, as he has numerous established couples he could’ve used for the dialouge: maybe he just likes to draw some different faces every once and a while.

Funny strip though. More risque then we usually see in the comic section.

Trudeau uses throwaway characters semi-regularly. And he has to, really.

He was trying to draw a strip that deals with a (possible) genuine demographic issue. To make the strip work, he needed an affluent, childless, liberal couple. As it now stands, NONE of his regular characters meet that description.

Ah, thanks. It just struck me as really weird to have non-recuring characters there, as I can’t recall ever having seen a Doonesbury strip like that with some random couple. I’ll take your word for it, though.

Well they could have a child or two and the joke still works. But you’re right, on further reflection I can’t think of a couple from the strip that are both liberal and the right age. Alex needs to hurry up and get married.

In case the link in the OP does get overwritten (it’s just a general one for the index page), this one should work.

She just got her college acceptance letters - it’s way too soon.

I think Jeff and Zipper should be leaving college soon-ish, kind of. Shouldn’t they? They might be the closest to the right demographic, and I don’t see either of them being too concerned.
