Like I said Nico’s version is my Exhibit A, not the entire argument. Usually when I try to explain that I think Morrison’s lyrics are overrated, people are often unable to separate their feelings for the Doors’ versions of the songs from the lyrics themselves. I think it was Morrison’s performance that made the lyrics not the other way around. I believe that cover versions bear this out, YMMV.
Bob Dylan’s songs have been covered by a myriad of performers of varying quality, but IMO the material generally holds up. If the version is bad it is usually the performance or the interpretation of the song by the musician that is lacking.
Since this thread was intended to find out about other cover versions of Doors songs rather than as a critique of Morrison’s songwriting abilities I’ll only lurk this thread from hear on out. Others are more capable of listing more cover versions, and I don’t want to hijacking someone else’s thread anymore than I already have. Excuse me.
