Doper Diplomacy - Winter-Spring 2003

This is a call for all Doper Diplomats.

We are looking to get another game of PBEM Diplomacy started on the Dope.

Roll call so far:

GM: White Lightning
Players:
Abe Babe
Wikkit
ppg_shg

We need 4 more players to start the game. If you are interested please post here and/or email me at the address listed in my profile and underneath this post.

I’ve never GM’ed a game before so I’d be a first-timer for this game. Abe is currently GM’ing one game and playing in none, and along with Wikkit who has missed the last few games (and I keep forgetting to email him!) provides the main impetus for this game.
Relevant SDMB threads:
New Diplomacy, current game being GM’ed by Abe Babe, entering Fall of 1902.
SDMB Newbie Diplomacy Game, current game for beginners being GM’ed by Omniscient, entering Fall? of 1901.
And, for good measure, Doper Diplomacy - Fall and Winter 2002, the last completed SDMB Dip games, one GM’ed by RTFirefly and the next one GM’ed by WeirdDave (thread is 15 pages).
Other links:
the Dip Pouch, online resource for Diplomatic concerns of all shapes and sizes.
The Rules, finally available online (caution: pdf).
Cat23, Jonathan Chance’s favorite online Dip-playing community.
World Masters Diplomacy 2002, current world e-mail Dip tournament; the SDMB has entered a team. Most games are in the 1903-05 range at this point if I’m not mistaken.

Apparently, I’m the forgotten step-child.

I believe Abe is playing in at least one game, though, the World Tourney, unless he’s already gone.

I’m all over that like Manny on a sock puppet.

I am alive and well in WM, having participated in the destruction of England, and ready to turn East, with armies already in Livonia and Silesia.

Oh, I didn’t take WM games into account; I was talking specifically about Doper games. Compared to the level of competition you’ll find in games run here on the board, the World Masters barely rates.

I’m still working on taunting JC and RT to play, so that may be a few more.

I’m in, what the hell. Playing in two, GMing one. I’m going after JC’s crown. Lets make it 3. Planning a straight up game, or a variant of some kind?

Good freaking luck, boy.

I’m in the running for Cat23 GM of the year.

Hell, I’m in if I get to spank Omni again.

Who spanked who exactly? How short ones memory gets in his old age.

Bend over boy!

So that’s a yes, then.

Abe Babe
ppg_shg
Wikkit
Omniscient
Jonathan Chance.

And RTFirefly has been nominated. Where’s he been lately, anyway?

Bringing our total to 5.5 players.

This is developing more quickly than I thought! Gotta get RP whipped into shape and get a copy of that superfandangled country assigner RT invented that I’ve heard so much about. Anybody know where I can get one? Omni, did you use it for your game?

If y’all want to start emailing country prefs to me I’d appreciate it. And JC, if you wouldn’t mind running through the procedure to get a CAT23 number assigned, one more time?
As far as standard vs. variant, I don’t want to run any of the more outlandish variants unless you guys are really committed to it. I have no preference for standard vs. Fleet Rome, or we could even play a Milano variant (typically creates an extra province on the board such that Italy’s northernmost center is no longer adjacent to Trieste) if the players are interested. If there’s no strong preference for anything wild like that we can just run it standard.
Next question: Time frame. I strongly prefer to have a regular schedule. My favorite has always been one week per game year: Spring due Tuesday evening, Fall Thursday evening, Winter Friday evening. We’d be talking adjudication at about 7 pm PST. Alternatively I could try to commit to doing it mornings before heading out, which would be something along the lines of 7 am PST. If any of you prefer morning adjudication I can make that work. Unfortunately it’ll have to be one or the other, though; I can’t do it from work. So let me know how you feel about that.

House rules per JC. NMRs will be avoided as much as possible, delays granted liberally.

Have I missed anything?

WL, I just eyeballed the country prefs. A couple players didn’t offer any, and I didn’t have the cutesy little script. It wasn’t too big an issue since everyone prefers were fairly diverse.

PS - I’m gonna miss stabbing you as GM.

They call that the ‘Wooley Time Table’…no foolin’.

Most of the veteran GMs on the Cat think I run insanely fast games. I even run HYPERDIP (currently in it’s 4th iteration) with a turn a day.

It’s why the players love me so.

To get yourself a Cat23 Game number go to www.cat23.com and click on Cat23 and hit the ‘Game Numbers’ link.

Remember, though…if you get a game number you’re committing yourself to CCing the cat23 results list with your adjudications.

MeMeMeMe!!!

Is it too late?

I will e-mail you my country preferences promptly

Having been weaned on Wooley games, I can’t stand slower games. I’ve always wanted to get into one of your Hyper games (dunno if I’d be able to cut it, with how the job’s been these days), but EVERY time you start one it fills up within, like, minutes. I get the CAT23 digest and every HYPER gamestart announcement comes in the same digest as the announcement that it’s closed.

I don’t mind CCing CAT23 on the results at all. I like having the number to legitimize the game.

tjblack, you’re in. That’s 6.5 pending RTFirefly. I’ll email him when I get home but if anyone else wants that last spot, if you claim it before RT does you can have it.

Get those prefs in, folks.

RT claims he’s too busy.

I also like the week a year schedule, but in my game, I made each of the first 4 ‘move’ turns four or five days to get the initial alliances sorted out.

My country preferences would be F T A E G R I

I think I’m blushing here, Lightnin’.

Blushing I tell you.

And I’ll save you a spot in the next HYPERDIP if you want (you should see the GM chats and what those HYPERDIPs inspire).

I’m going to have to take a pass – my current schedule won’t accomodate a commitment to a Dip turn a day. I really do appreciate the offer, though.

So. We need one more player. I’ve got three sets of prefs (including Abe’s above). Please let me know even if you have no preferences so that I can assign positions. If I don’t hear anything on the variant before I get 7 players with country prefs I will assume it’ll be standard – I need to know the variant to get the game number assigned, and that’s something I’d like to do ASAP (so I can name the folder in my Inbox).

Roster:
Abe Babe
ppg_shg
Wikkit (although he still hasn’t shown up to confirm)
Omniscient
Jonathan Chance
dark horse tjblack.
player to be named.

Do with me as you will, country-wise.

Just make sure Abe gets Italy. He’s um…real good at it.

Which of the threads mentioned above do I need to read to find what server you’re using and how to register?

What sort of press are we using and all that?

tjblack, once the game’s set White Lightning will post a link for the map. You shouldn’t need to register anywhere. And, FWIW, the lot of your opponents are right b@$t@rds. I’ll be pulling for you as the underdog.
