I bought mine in 2006- not sure if it’s 15 or 16. I’ve heard that 2009 has a lot more features.
Has anybody tried it and if so whaddya think? Also, is there any real difference in Essentials, Deluxe and Platinum versions other than how many months worth of membership to ancestry.com it comes with?
My father recently bought the 2009 version and he loves it. He says it is much easier to navigate than version 16, and does indeed have a lot more features.
Unfortunately, that’s about all I can tell you. I have version 16. I really should bring his 2009 version over and install it; it’s good for up to 3 computers.
I would be happy to relay any questions you have. Also, I should mention that he got a big discount (about 50%) by begging & pleading and telling them he was already a customer, having previously purchased version 16.
Since you are checking anyway…
Would your father know if the new FTM is capable of printing out mailing lists/labels?
Apparently on the last one, the designers removed that feature, and my parents have been grumbling about it for a couple of years now.
I have moved up to 2009, but that’s because my first one was 2008. 08 was so buggy that they started over again with 09 and gave it to me for free. I do like it much better then 08, but I’ve heard a lot of complaints about 09. I don’t think it will make a book, you have to do it online from Ancestry, and a few other things were taken out.
So far none of that has bothered me as I’m not writing a book or anything like that. I’ve also tried a couple of the others and think I will stick with FTM09. I think the big thing that I like about it is that I can add a person without having a new window pop up, I like just being able to type in a name and some dates and go on to the next person.
Well, I talked to my dad. Keep in mind that he only got the 2009 version very recently, and hasn’t had a lot of time to check out everything. Also, he mostly uses it to look up ancestors, dates, locations, and pictures.
My uncle did the great majority of the research and my dad uses a copy of that. So, what he said was he finds it much easier to find what he’s looking for, to import data, to view pictures. He likes the interactive map. I think he just likes the re-designed interface better.
Sorry I can’t give you more detailed info!
Oh, he also said he can’t find any way to print mailing lists/labels.
I stopped buying genealogy software when I discovered geni.com
By allowing family members to input their own info it grew 100x more than if I input the info myself.
