This has been explained to you several times, but you just aren’t getting it. Cecil Newton did not turn down money. Mississippi State didn’t offer any. Rogers asked for cash, and MSU turned them down. Got it? Now, is it still hard to understand why someone would turn down an offer of $0 to play for $0?

No similarity between the cases. Reggie Bush got extra benefits, nobody associated with Cam Newton got extra benefits.

A USC assistant coach handled the details of delivering the extras. No one at Auburn delivered anything.

Reggie Bush was well aware of the extra goodies. Cam Newton knew nothing about his father discussing money with Kenny Rogers.

I see that Cam Newton’s name was entered on 93% of the ballots. That’s a very good indication that the voters took time to look at and evaluate the details involved here.

Duke lacrosse players didn’t have a documented history of raping strippers. Auburn University has a documented history of paying players, admitted by a former coach.

AUBURN, Ala. – Former Auburn coach Terry Bowden said on tape two years ago that boosters were funneling thousands of dollars to football players when he became coach in 1993, a time when the Tigers already were on NCAA probation.

“They were paying players cash, $12,000, $15,000 to sign,” Bowden said on a recording reviewed by The Associated Press. "All I was told to do was shake hands and say, ‘Thank you. I appreciate how much you love Auburn.’ "

Bowden did not make clear whether he reported the payment scheme to the NCAA but said on the tape: “When I came here, I put an end to it.”

Bowden’s comments were reported Sunday by the Opelika-Auburn News. A columnist taped the comments in a meeting about two years ago, and a copy of the tape was made available to AP.

Bowden did not return a phone call by the AP to his home in Orlando, Fla. He is a sports commentator for ABC Sports, where spokesman Adam Freifield said Bowden contended the remarks were off the record and had no further comment.

A statement issued by Auburn questioned why remarks made by Bowden in 2001 are only now being reported. The columnist who taped the comments, Paul Davis, said Tuesday there had been concern that Bowden’s remarks were “off the record” and not for publication. Davis said Bowden has sent him an e-mail encouraging their publication

“Guilty until proven innocent” is what many people with a grudge against the SEC think when an SEC team is under controversy.

I mean, if Bowden put a stop to it and Bowden was hired in '93, that means the last payment must have been about 18 years ago, if Bowden isn’t lying.

Since the article calls Bowden a sports commentator with a home in Orlando, that would be after Bowden quit coaching at Auburn after being notified that he was going to be fired. That makes this quote of Bowden’s around 12 years old.

Why didn’t Bowden speak up in 1993? Another bitter person with no proof is the best guess.

No, it’s not. It is on tape and Bowden acknowledged it and said it was fine to publicize it.

I liked it better when SEC fans just said “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying” and “it ain’t cheating if you don’t get caught”.

This faux-innocent “what, us cheat? Impossible!” head-in-the-sand schtick is a lot less endearing.

You have a point, but if someone is going to point the finger and yell “CHEATER”, they need to have something more than “it just doesn’t feel quite right”.

Such things wouldn’t fly on the SDMB, and certainly don’t fly in an investigation or court case.

That’s one of the most weasel posts I’ve ever read. “I know we don’t have any evidence, but I would prefer it if you didn’t defend yourself”
