I usually spend all day at work listening to NPR. Keeps me sane. Today on The Connection, a call-in discussion show, the subject was chat rooms, message boards, and the state of online discourse in general.
Imagine my glee (I actually said “Yay!” aloud, and it’s a good thing no one else works in this room, 'cause, y’know, quel embarrassmont), when one of the callers turned out to be one of our very own, calling to speak of the wonderfulness that is the SDMB.
So, which of the Fabulous Women of Dope was spreading the Good News on NPR today?
I missed the first few minutes, but the rest of the show was very good. It was one of the best discussions of online communities that I’ve ever heard, and most of what they talked about has happened here at one time or another.
And mostly I just wanted to bump this thread so whoever called will come in and fess up. C’mon, who was it?
Okay, I’m going to chalk up this disinterest ('sides you, beagledave, you’re all right) to the hiccuping server. Things seem to be going okay now, though, so I say unto you:
A doper! On a national radio show! Spreading Cecil’s Love!
I heard it too!
Even odder: I work outside most of the time, but headed into the office cause it was raining, and I was wet and miserable. Right then, the Doper in question came on the radio, stating she was J, from----.
“Hey mebbe it’s THAT J…”, I thought,( her’s is not that common a name) then when she started talking, “Man, that sure sounds like her!” She has a wonderful, distinctive voice. Then, she mentions the Straight Dope, particularly the BBQ Pit, as a way one board avoids overall nastiness. It was our dear J, after all, well-spoken and poised, on a nationally aired show!
I was delighted by the serendipity, especially since she has just again come into my radar on a previous thread here. I ain’t gonna tell her identity, will give her the blush over the podium. She’s muy cool, and beautiful, too—there’s yer hint.
The irony is, all that work in the rain has got me done sick, so I’ve missed the meeting which was the reason I couldn’t be in her fine company right now. Life is a strange beastie!
I listened to the program on their site, and it was kinda cool. Aside from some the shaky voice, which is easily chalked up to nervousness, the doper spoke intelligently, with conviction, and did us proud. With that in mind, I think we can eliminate Wildest Bill, Kay Kay, and JDT as suspects. Most everyone else is under suspicion.
I got to stay on the live show line till the show ended, and was all set to talk about the Dopefests, (which is what really interested the intern), but that Mark fellow went on and on, and then the show was over.
