So I’m minding my own business, looking up some Everquest quests for the hubby to do, and lo and behold, who do I find? Opalcat!. Reminds me of running into that person you went to high school with while vacationing in France. Anyone else have a virtual run in?
While browsing a friend’s LiveJournal, I looked at her profile and saw that she had our college listed as one of her interests. I clicked on the name, and up came a short (very short) list of other LJ users. There was my friend, two of our other classmates, and. . .a well-known, popular, and intelligent Doper!
I was very pleased to see that such a distinguished personage was a graduate of my school. I was tempted to e-mail her about it, but I thought that might seem kinda creepy since we’ve never corresponded before, not even here on the SDMB. That’s why I haven’t even said her name here. I feel icky revealing personal information (even something as minor as this) about anyone else, especially when she may not even know who I am!
Found out a Doper is a mod at the wrestlingclassics.com boards. I don’t know who though… he posted in a thread “Are you hardy from SDMB?” but never gave his Doper name.
I still want to know, Mystery Doper and I will keep your secret. Besides, there’s only one other Doper at wcmb…that I know about anyways.
I have a friend who I just re-established contact with… we were discussing caffiene, and she sent me a link to a Cecil column!
I don’t know if she’s part of the board. The one time years ago I asked her about SDMB, she thought I was asking her about SM/BD… interesting conversation, if nothing else.
I stumbled upon a jinwicked page (I think it was part of a journal or something) when I was looking up something completely unrelated. Like a movie review or a tutorial on Photoshop. Something totally non-SDMB-related. Weirded me out.
Yup. I would link to the thread but I believe it has been vaporized.
Anyway, I was reading about some old TV shows I used to watch and came across a post on IMDB by Esprix regarding one of them.
I believe rjung used to write some intelligent posts in rec.arts.comics and still does so here. There was another poster that borrowed a topic from Cafe Society and started a thread in Usenet, so I talked to him a bit, but now I can’t remember his name.
Not the Web so much, but dreamer and I ended up at the same house in The Sims Online just the other day. The only reason we discovered it was because I overheard her mention her experience auditioning for Cirque du Soleil and I thought, “Two people auditioning for CdS in Vegas in such a short time? That would be an amazing coincidence.”
I’ve never run into anyone else, but I’ve been run into.
Several years ago I wrote a short piece about the lyrics to a Grateful Dead song, and the piece was quoted on the SDMB by another poster. It was nice to see that someone thought enough of my earlier analysis to quote from it.
This serves as a reminder to me just how un-net-savvy I am.
Oh, that’s a “no.”
I have seen Green Bean posting over on Fametracker…wasn’t sure if it was the same person until I saw her mention the SDMB totally tangentially. That was kind of neat.
I’ve seen Dr. Lao at other boards. Tdn and Sam Clem I saw at the snopes board before I ever came here. Guinastasia was everywhere for a while, but that made me think maybe I was seeing a lot of dopers, but just noticing her because her name is so distinctive.
rjung from Transformers fandom, alt.toys.transformers.
CMK, I ‘knew’ for years as part of Legion of Superheroes fandom, he keeps the FAQ and the faith.
Oh, when I was in high school (late '90s) I used a web article about Sappho as a reference for a paper I was writing, and discovered only a few months ago that the author was the SDMB’s own Anthracite!
I’ve noticed a couple Dopers on fan fiction sites but never made contact. It did seem kind of strange… like “Hey… what’re they doing here?”
Kind of like when you were a kid and saw a teacher out in public- you never thought of them existing outside of the space you knew them in.
I keep running into Mercutio in various bathhouses, but I’m not supposed to talk about it.
Esprix
I got a few comments on my Livejournal from imthjckaz a while ago, and as I’m a newbie here, it took me forever to figure out how he knew me.
I ran into Jurhael on the VNV Nation boards at Audiogalaxy last year.
Bad Astronomer’s website. I get lots of space related e-mails and sometimes his pages are mentioned.
I stumbled across her webcam once. That was a surreal experience, particularly considering the site I was on at the time…
(When I think Jinn, I don’t really think “Stileproject”…)
