Finding IRL people on the SDMB

Has anyone ever discovered that an IRL acquaintance, friend or SO was a member of this board (discovery by accident, by reading posts…not being directly told by this person.)

Say you’ve been reading threads originally posted by PosterX. After awhile, you start to think, hey, my friend-co-worker-SO was just talking about that. You become so convinced that you go up to the person and ask him if he’s a member of the SDMB…he says, “Why, yes, I am!”

Has this ever happened in the history of The Dope? Hope I made this somewhat clear. Let me know if I need to try again, or if this is in the wrong forum.

Thanks!

Nope, although my husband just had a MySpace friend ask him if his wife was a Doper. We’d both posted pictures of our daughter at the Renaissance Faire - me here and he on MySpace. She recognized them and remembered that I posted them first.

What is an “IRL acquatance”?

A friendly dolphin?

This possibility is why I try not to post too much about my job. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes. It should have been obvious too, considering the name. But it still took me a year or so to notice.

I expected your location to be Latveria.

Yes. A former college classmate of mine posts here. I about flipped when I realized it.

No one has an answer to my question?

In Real Life.

P.S.: www.acronymfinder.com

More, please? How did you figure it out?

Well, I already knew NinjaChick is currently a student at the same college. A few months ago, she was talking about school, and Tabula Rasa popped in, not only to state that she was an alumnus, but to give her class year – the same as mine! I did some sleuthing and figured out exactly who she was, and then she admitted that she’d suspected who I was – I still don’t know how she knew that. I’m mildly surprised there aren’t more of us hanging around SDMB, but I’m sure she would have said so if there were.

I discovered a doper on a friend’s myspace page. Friend is not a doper and moved far far away from me long ago and we contact via internet almost exclusively now. Other than that, I got nothing.
Except the time I thought a guy at work was a doper and it turned out I was wrong. I felt pretty stupid after that.

When I first joined, a doper that mostly lurked saw my original username and from some of my posts and my location gathered it was I. We went to High School together in the same class. She Emailed me and we exchanged a few Emails.

Regretfully, she was not able to attend the first Dopefest I hosted. I believe she has let her account lapse.

I remember reading this thread a few years ago. In post #11 elfbabe discovers that her father is Qadgop the Mercotan.

Wow, that was pretty cool.

There was once a thread where we tried to see if any two Dopers knew the same person. The only hit, IIRC, was that Litoris and I knew two guys with the same name who also happened to be cousins.

An acquaintance of mine posted on the SDMB. I found this out because he told me (and his screen name is almost his real life name). I don’t think he posts here anymore (and I haven’t seen him).

Pepper Mill posted briefly. She’s my wife. She didn’t sign up when fees went into effect, and now only posts through me when she wants to.

One other Doper might be someone I’ve met before, but I haven’t tried to verify this.

I can only compare that moment to the scene in The Empire Strikes Back where Han stuffs Luke into a taun-taun

I almost started a thread like this one myself. I censor myself when it comes to writing about work because I find that a lot of posters are from my location, in spring!

BTW, QtM

Were you Luke, Han, or the Taun-Taun?
