Finding IRL people on the SDMB

**Northern Piper ** and I know each other IRL. I figuered it out from his location and the topics he was expert on.

Dude, you totally got me on that one! I thought you were going to say

Luke, I am burning you dog.

I’m not sure we quite reached the level of Real Life Acquaintances. But I did once discover that a poster and I almost shared a past, and certainly knew people in common.

Once upon a time, this message board had a Musical Lovers Salon and Debating Society. One of the musicals discussed was Little Shop of Horrors. Needless to say, conversation dwelt significantly on differences between the stage show and the movie.

I mentioned some differences peculiar to one particular production, and another poster–who will remain nameless because I can’t remember the name, and I’m not going to do a search on the thread just to namedrop–recognized the production. After a few tenative pokes at each other to try to get the other one to mention the time and place of the production, we confirmed that we were both acquainted with at least some of the cast and crew.

We never exchanged any truly personal information, so we( or at least I) don’t know that we had actually ever met, but the odds are in favor of us having been at the same place at the same time, in a situation a tad more intimate than both attending a pro-sporting event.

In high school, someone walked up to me and said the 1999 equivalent of “So, I burning you dog?” to me.

My brain just kinda froze up because I didn’t know how to react to that question presented so very out-of-context.

Also, a friend of mine through Yelp said she’s on the SDMB, and even knew a few of my SDMB friends, but she refuses to tell me her screen name. I just assume she posted a dozen times in the TMI Thread.

Nope. Sure would be cool, though, and I’m constantly on the lookout for Dopers in the real world.

Achernar (who no longer posts here) and I overlapped one year in college, in the same major. I figured him out (after we were no longer in contact IRL) because that’s the same username he used on ICQ, together with the particular style of nerdery.

I love being in a community where one’s style of nerdery can be considered distinctive.

After hearing my boss name the Dope as the place where she learned about how to make chewing gum dissolve in your mouth, I started greeting one of my co-workers constantly, just to see if my boss reacted to my saying “Hi, Opal” several times a day. No luck, though- she never seemed to perk up at that, so I assume she’s not on the Boards.

Ditto. Showed up out of the blue a while back with a very familiar username. Hadn’t known her particularly well back then, but we were more or less friendly, so with a bit of hesitation I messaged her: “Are you…?” And she said “Yep, and you…?” Small world, innit?

Oh, and Hitler posts here, too. But I don’t know him that well.

Yes. Years ago, my brother registered and posted a couple of questions after I told him about the board, and so did a friend of mine, but neither of them became regulars. I spotted them both (and won a case of beer from my friend because he bet me I couldn’t. Good times).

I also introduced celestina to the boards, and she was a regular for a while, but I think she’s let her membership lapse. She was my roommate during my first five years of grad school, and when she started posting, I kept reading her posts and thinking, “Gosh, that sounds just like something my roommate would say” – but I didn’t tumble to the fact that she actually WAS my roommate until she told me

“Gotcha ya” is now a normal part of my own vocabulary.

An online friend of mine once had someone respond to one of his LJ posts with an SDMB thread; that friend of his who did that was a Doper.

I know of a couple of Dopers who live in my hometown, and have casual connections to both of them (distant, but there).

I forget Dooku’s new name, but we’ve established that we have most likely been in the same bar at the same time at some point.

ITR Champion and I were in the same class in college. I discovered it while we were still in school. (“ITR” is something rather school-specific). I did some board sleuthing at the time and I think I figured out who ITR is, but I don’t think we ever spoke about it.

She obviously knew he was a SDMB member, since it’s clear he showed her the blimp in the night thread, which introduced her to the SDMB. So it’s not that coincidental, really.

I tried to find out if anyone on here knew me a few months back. Unfortunately some took it as a challenge to figure out who I am and they shut down the thread. I’m still curious if anyone here knows me (but please understand that I’m not asking you to figure out who I am.)

There are, but they won’t tell me their user names.

I see. ::looks over both shoulders::

Perhaps we should start an Offend Everyone We’ve Ever Met thread and see who we shake out of the woodwork.

I know who you are. I can see you right now, in fact. And you need to stop doing that or you’ll go blind.
