Chain 2 - Montgomery to Birmingham on I-65
(And if Chain 1 does the southern route, I’ve got I-85 from Atlanta to Montgomery)
Complete with Momnibus - LOTS of room for bags and people!

OOOOoo and I can get from I-10 in FLA to Montgomery (US HWY 231) no problem
Honestly, if you do get the time off, I think you should do this! It would make a great travelogue book… Seeing America 100 miles at a time getting rides from people you’ve only known previously via the internet (yeah, I’m sure you’ve met some of the people in real life already, but it makes it sound more interesting to say you only know them over the internet! :D). “Virtually Hitchhiking Across America”. I really think it’s a great idea!
Oh good. Glad you cleared that one up for me, **Rue. ** I mean, I’ve actually met **Shibb, ** and I know he’d be great for conversation. And he’ll let me rub his head, too!
So I guess that means you’re buying the gas?
If Rue’s providing the gas, I’m providing the gas masks!
I’ve got Pittsburgh covered, including I-79, I-76, and I-70. Breezewood, PA, where I-70 joins up with I-76, is about 100 miles from here, but if we extend the range a bit, I could probably hook up with Airman Doors for the hand-off. From New Stanton, PA, I could take either I-70 or I-76 to the Ohio border and a bit beyond. I’ve also got an in at the museum in Moundsville, West Virginia, if someone wants to meet up or break the journey there.
This is a fun thing to think about!

Ba-ha! Gingy you funny!
Persephone, if you don’t manage a stop at Casa Dave-Guy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do.
And, of course, Euty could very easily hop from FriendBill’s to here on his way to LA.
I’m near the junction of I-90 and I-87 in Albany, NY. It’s kind of out of the way unless you’re coming down from Québec, though.
I have I-40 and I-44 either side of the Arkansas / Oklahoma line covered if that helps?
Hmmm…Im some of the bigger western states, 100 mi might not even get to the next town
A hundred miles or less out of Albuquerque I could get somebody to:
South on I-25: Socorro-75 miles, next T or C (Truth or Consequences,) 160?
North i-25: Santa Fe-55 miles, no other big town close.
East on I-40: Santa Rosa- 115 miles, Tucumcari next about 170
West I-40: Grants-80 miles, Gallup is next about 140
Yeah, Klaatu, I was thinking the same thing - getting over the continental divide and across the western states might be tricky.
I’m just outside Philadelphia, at the intersection of I-76 and I-476.
For chain #1, I can pick someone up in NJ, possibly near where the NJ and PA turnpikes meet. I can drive them west and hand them off to Robyn and Doors.
For chain #2, I pick up from Robyn & Doors (who picked up from cjhoworth), drive down to Ellicott, MD, and hand off to GingerOfTheNorth.
(I think it’s useful to identify who in the chains you link with, and if possible who they link to. That way we build up the chains and eventually someone posts the full series.)
I did this (sort of) back in 2001. I went from Minnesota to Texas, stopping along the way to meet Dopers. It was cool.

Well, I’m about four miles from the intersection of I-79 and I-80, so I can do western PA in any direction.
I can cover most of central Arkansas all the way down to east Texas.
From home I could cover say, Indianapolis to Bloomington, IL east-west (that’s I-74), and I could cover a stretch of Illinois Route 1 north to about Watseka, IL and south to where it joins up with I-70.
I know there are dopers in Indy, or who could get to Indy by driving the 100 miles. I also know there are folks in Springfield, IL who could get to Bloomington, IL and take you from there to St. Louis at least, probably.
From college I’m afraid the only useful thing would be north on 37 to Indianapolis, or perhaps covering a section of I-65.
Yeah, agreed, the Western states are going to get messy. Las Vegas is 100 miles from nowhere. But it’s about 150 miles to Barstow–there might be someone there who can get Eutychus the rest of the way to L.A. (another 150 miles, roughly).
And don’t go too far up here in the Great Plains. We can get you through the Twin Cities just fine - but I wouldn’t want to find a Doper (or a human being, or a tree) every hundred miles through South Dakota!
Your best bet might be running down the Eastern seaboard - even then you might not want to start in Maine.
You may have to up the mileage limit. There isn’t much within 100 miles of DFW, except more DFW. Maybe if the limit were one interstate jump? You know, each Doper can transport you across one state line at most? Of course, that would still be hard on whichever DFW Doper formed a link. Maybe two of us could drive in relays…
