Doper Update: Dog training thread

We get a lot of requests for dog training help around here and there’s a lot of knowledgeable people who give great advice.

I’m wondering what became of all those pooches. For anyone who’s ever asked for dog training help, do you have any success - or not-so-success - stories?

The pugs report that they have me trained just fine. I throw the toy as needed, and am good at giving them human-food treats, though Mr. Athena is still doing better than me at that one. They do need help as far as food in general; they claim that too often our food is “spicy” and they cannot eat it. More steak, less chili.

This morning I nearly started another thread, about food aggression. Maybe there should be a “pets” forum?

Anyway:

The day after I got my puppy I posted this thread, freaking out a little about crate training and leash training and…well…new puppy stuff. It’s now 5.5 months later, and I’m happy to report that Bailey (and I) settled down pretty quickly and now I have a great little dog! I wound up buying one of the books recommended in that thread, and I keep it on my shelf for reference (though I have found that I need to take what it says with a grain of salt, just like any dog training advice).

Hmm, I’ve had at least one (see below- or not- it was gross) and like Misnomer thought about starting another today (to get opinions on the various collars that stop pulling- the lab has decided heeling isn’t for her anymore).

One thread was about the way the male wouldn’t stop licking the female. Very glad to say he grew out of that on his own. Just as dopers said he would. I have a puppy (and an adult dog). Help. - Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share - Straight Dope Message Board

Captain still pulls at the leash, and the local obedience classes still haven’t called me back. (I guess I need to call PetSmart again, but damn, they’re kind of far away, and don’t they care enough to return my call?)
