Dopers: Do you regret your tattoos?

Go ahead and blame Mike. He was such a brat that I’m sure yours is his fault somehow. Hell, global warming and sunspots are all his fault IMO

I have 3. I got the first when I was 18 and it’s the only one I don’t like it but I wouldn’t go so far as to say I regret it and I will never get it removed.

  1. Do you have a tattoo/s?
    Yes, 1.

  2. How old were you when you received the first one?
    I was 19.

  3. How old are you now?

  1. Do you regret it?
    Not at all.

  2. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?
    N/A.

  3. What is it of?
A red star with a thin black line making a circle around the edges, just a little to the inside of the points.

  4. Where is it?
Right in between my shoulder blades, about an inch below my collar line.

  5. Anything else you’d like to add?
I’d like to get more, actually. I wanted to add to this one when I get some more money and I’d like to get another in a different place, but not sure where. So far, I have no reason whatsoever for it to be an experience I regret. I’m often suprised when people regret them, but that is just me.

  1. Do you have a tattoo/s?
    Yes

  2. How old were you when you received the first one?
    20

  3. How old are you now?
    26

  4. Do you regret it?
No, but I would do it differently if I had to do it again

  5. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?
    No, but possibly altered

  6. What is it of?
It’s a small “tribal”-stylized sun, in black ink. I think it would be nicer with some color, so I may eventually go back and touch it up a little, adding color to the center, which is empty now). If I had a time machine, I’d go back and do the whole thing with color instead.

  7. Where is it?
    On my right ankle

  8. Anything else you’d like to add?
    Nope

  1. Do you have a tattoo/s? Yes, one

  2. How old were you when you received the first one? 20

  3. How old are you now? 21

  4. Do you regret it? Not yet, but I haven’t had it long. I also enjoy it more and more the longer I have it.

  5. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?

  6. What is it of? It is a Voltaire quote, “It is not enough to conquer, one must know how to seduce” in French, in a pretty calligraphic font. It’s all black

  7. Where is it? My right shoulderblade

  8. Anything else you’d like to add? I’ll second the idea to have an idea for a long time and let it grow on you. But sometimes you just have a vague idea and when you see it, you know it’s right, so I suppose it really depends on the person.

  9. Re: itching I haven’t noticed any itching associated with it either, not so far anyway.

-foxy

I’m surprised more people DON’T regret them, honestly. The level of screeching baleful warning issued by the anti-tattoo crowd seriously had me thinking that lots of people regret their work. I get that this is a self-selecting sample, but it is in synch with what I’ve experienced actually talking to the tattooed - very few people actually regret it later. We might have things we want to fix or touch up, but I’ve never actually heard a “I was soooooo young and stupid and I just don’t know what I was thinking and boy do I regret that tattoo!” story. (Of course, now we’ll hear 30, just because I posted that.)

My favorite coverup for the ex-girlfriend’s name, though: a red VOID stamp.

  1. Do you have a tattoo/s? Yes, I have one, my husband has 3.

  2. How old were you when you received the first one? 23-ish. He was in his early 20s somewhere.

  3. How old are you now? I’m 28 (in two weeks), he’s 32.

  4. Do you regret it? Never. LOVE them.

  5. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered? N/A

  6. What is it of? I have a small stick figure camera operator. He’s got a tribal dragon and two Elfquest inspired tattoos.

  7. Where is it? Mine is on my ankle, his are on his deltoid and both shoulderblades.

  8. Anything else you’d like to add? Tattoos shouldn’t itch, or be raised, usually. Do those of you with itchy raised tattoos scar easily with other wounds? I’ve got the most sensitive skin ever and I’ve never had an issue, and I tend to scar at the drop of a hat.

I do. I’ve been known to scar from mosquito bites, and I don’t scratch. When I was young, I had several moles removed by a plastic surgeon to minimize the scarring. They’re all huge keloid scars. But I should clarify that the one that itches doesn’t itch all the time, but if I’m sweaty or in the sun it will be the first bit of skin to start itching.

  1. Do you have a tattoo/s?

Yup, two.

  1. How old were you when you received the first one?

18

  1. How old are you now?

28

  1. Do you regret it?

It’s been one of the worst addictions I’ve ever faced. If I had the money I’d look like I was in Motley Crue.

  1. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?

Never.

  1. What is it of?

Tibetian dragon from my left shoulder to my left elbow and a splayed fingered hand sized (that was my indication to the artist, you know “Like this big”) shamrock on my left calf with a banner that reads “Good Luck”

  1. Where is it?

Oh, whoops.

  1. Anything else you’d like to add?

I really love getting tats, but I scar like a sumbitch, even with an amazing amount of delicate after care. The one on my calf is 2 years old in another two weeks and during the dry winter it itches like nuts if I don’t lotion it up like I did when it was new. A bit of cocoa butter makes it all better again. I’m hoping to score another one for my birthday…ink rocks.

I don’t scar. Sloppily stitched incisions are almost invisble within a few months, burns with a year. I am allergic to sulfa drugs, many perfumes, and bell peppers, with very “fine” thin, pale, freckled skin. I swell to impressive proportions with mosquito and (little black) ant bites, but barely notice bee or wasp (wasps hurt, but don’t swell) stings. I don’t swell after breaking bones, have low blood pressure, and don’t puff during PMS.

The yellow ink on my never-exposed-to-sunlight ass is slightly raised compared to the other colors as well as my uninked skin, and is occassionaly itchy within the exact boundaries of the yellow ink.

Maybe it’s a genetic thing – I also am the only person in my family who likes cilantro  .

That’s what happened to me with the wolf on my arm: I knew I wanted a second tattoo, and some kind of wolf was one of the options I was considering, but then I found myself at a tattoo convention and saw this design in some guy’s portfolio. After wandering around the convention for another hour, not wanting to leave because I was afraid I’d never find another wolf design that I liked so much, I got it done right there.

Mine itches mostly when it’s hot and I get too sweaty, same with raising. It sits right under the waistband of my jeans, so they tend to rub on it. I also do tend to scar badly, though, with some pretty nasty keloid scarring where I’ve had a mole removed.

Well there’s your problem!

I don’t scar easily. That said, I have lots of scars, but for good reason (deep cuts, really hot things and chunks of meat removed leave nice scars).

  1. Do you have a tattoo/s? Yes, 2 (so far)

  2. How old were you when you received the first one? 20

  3. How old are you now? 25

  4. Do you regret it? Nope. Though one can be a pain in the ass, placement wise

  5. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered? n/a

  6. What is it of?/7) Where is it? The first one is of a Thunderbird (the mythical beast, not the car) with mountains in its wings. It’s on my chest, taking up most of it. I love it, but my mom is not a fan of tattoos (to put it mildly) and finding a wedding dress that would cover it was very hard. My second one is a Celtic “tree of life” (like this but without the border). It’s under my arm.

  7. Anything else you’d like to add? I got them both at important points in my life; since then, 2 big things have happened (finishing my MA/starting my PhD and getting married) but I have yet to put those in ink. Yet. Money’s tight, and I keep changing my mind. When I get my PhD, I’m planning to get my back done: a tree with branches that curve over my shoulders and roots that go down to my butt.

  8. Do you find your tattoo itches more than other skin? Nope.

1) Do you have a tattoo/s?
Two.

2) How old were you when you received the first one?
35.

3) How old are you now?
39.

4) Do you regret it?
No.

5) If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?
N/a.

6) What is it of?
1: the lid of a well, stylised by me.
2: my own design, a bird flying out from between two tsunami waves. Done by traditional Thai bamboo technique.

7) Where is it?
1: upper right arm.
2: upper left arm.

8) Anything else you’d like to add?
I promised myself one would be enough, and I waited years to get it. Now I want a third.

Both of mine raise up occasionally, though not usually at the same time. I don’t scar very easily.

No. I actually forget I have it because it’s on my back.

When I lose all my pudge and get down to my ideal size I’m buying a BCBG dress and getting myself another one (dharma chakra, I already have an om).

1) Do you have a tattoo/s?
Yep, five. (I think I win the thread!)

2) How old were you when you received the first one?
19

3) How old are you now?
26 (for another month)

4) Do you regret it?
No.

5) If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?
N/a.

6) What is it of?

  1. 24601
  2. a crescent moon
  3. the words “dirait-on”
  4. theatre masks
  5. a piece of a music score my friend wrote

7) Where is it?

  1. lower back
  2. shoulder
  3. ankle
  4. lower back
  5. left arm (band)

8) Anything else you’d like to add?
Probably. I’m addicted.

No itching.

  1. Do you have a tattoos? Yes, I have three. My First (lousy picture) representing my faith, my Phoenix which I try to maintain as a kind-of philosophy and my Frank Miller Babe which I got just for fun.

  2. How old were you when you received the first one? Umm. 38?

  3. How old are you now? 42

  4. Do you regret it? Nope.

  5. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?

  6. What is it of? Links above.

  7. Where is it? The band is on my left bicep, the Phoenix is on my right, almost shoulder to elbow, and the Babe is on my right shoulder blade.

  8. Anything else you’d like to add? Somes I consider a fourth, something to represent my three children in my life but I’ve yet to find anything that really grabs me emotionally or visually enough to follow through on it.

1) Do you have a tattoo/s?

Yes, several.

2) How old were you when you received the first one?

21 or 22, I think.

3) How old are you now?

4) Do you regret it?

Nope.

5) If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?

No. I’ve toyed with the idea of having some of the smaller ones covered up with larger and more intricate work, but I’d never remove them. If nothing else, the sheer amount of time it would take would be massive.

6) What is it of?

Two old school pieces, two larger pieces, one a half-sleeve scene of a tornado in a trailer park.

7) Where is it?

Smaller pieces on chest and shoulder, half-sleeve on other shoulder, half-sleeve on opposite forearm. I once heard that if you ever plan on being a lawyer you shouldn’t get a tattoo on your forearm, so I just had to do it.

8) Anything else you’d like to add?

My feeling on tattoos has always been get 'em and forget 'em. I think about my tattoos about as often as I think about the color of my eyes, which is not all that often. I appreciate good work, but it really doesn’t make much of a difference to me if someone else has tattoos or not.

  1. Do you have a tattoo/s?
    Yes, one.

  2. How old were you when you received the first one?
    36

  3. How old are you now?
    37

  4. Do you regret it?
A spectrum of not-really and absolutely not. (As an aside, I find the near 98% non-regrettal ratio interesting.)

  5. If yes, Do you plan on having it removed or covered?
    nopers

  6. What is it of?
    1954 Corvette Logo

  7. Where is it?
Right Calf, kinda rotated a little so that when I tip my foot up to show someone, it’s level.

  8. Anything else you’d like to add?
The wife had wanted a Tat for YEARS and got a stone cat-goyle in the POT area (Pull out Target…Tramp Stamp was already taken. I thought we were growing apart and wanted to do something with her to help stay on the same page. That said, I had the logo in mind for a good 6 months before getting mine.

My only regrets revolve around making sure the Boys get reasonable tattoos when the time comes…it’s not like I can tell them ‘no’.

I got mine on the calf because I wanted it seen. I didn’t want a shoulder tat that would make me wear wife beaters to show it off. It’s a pity that the one place I really want it seen (the Race Track) requires long pants if you’re racing.

I dunno if I’d get another. I’d have to give it a LOT of thought. As it is, I like this one, and it’s a good counterpoint to the end of a really bad stretch of time.
