Dopers “of color”: Would you be white?

Let’s see , pros and cons- I won’t stand out so much at the Goth clubs, but to make up for it, I’d have to lose my sense of rhythm and a few inches of penis? And I’d burn a lot easier.

Naah, I’ll stay coloured - and culturally, I’m the whitest Capetonian I know! (Comes from being this complete Anglophile, don’tcha know)

I could have written this almost word for word. I still wouldn’t want to be white, though. Experiencing the world as a black gal has had an integral part of shaping who I am today. I wouldn’t want to change that for anything.

I actually think I’ve gotten as far as I have because I’m black. No, I’m not talking about affirmative action or any such thing, I just think people (of all racial and ethnic backgrounds) think I’m interesting because I’m not what they expect. Sometimes, I like the fact that I challenge people’s preconceived notions and stereotypes. There are times when not behaving the way people think I should generates annoying questions or comments, but hey, such is life.

I don’t know.

Pros: I’d be more “mainstream,” which can be a good thing. The chance of being racially discriminated against goes down.
Cons: I’d lose my natural skin protection, and would get more wrinkles as I age.

Race just doesn’t play much of a role in my every day life, and as far as I know, being black hasn’t caused me much harm up to this point. Some days, I’d probably change just in case being black was going to cause me trouble in the future. Other days, I’d say “no, why bother,” since it hasn’t caused any big problems yet AFAIK.

And on the other hand, this is something I agree with, but hadn’t thought about.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but this thread reminds me of a story I saw in the British tabloids a week or two back about a couple, both mixed race, who had just produced a pair of twins, one black and one white. Pretty cool I thought, and it would be interesting to watch them grow up and see how they develop differently.

Me? White? Nahhh I’ll pass.

White? No way. White to me mean Vanilla Caucasian. Being of mixed European descent with no sense heritage.

Now if we’re talking about being reincarnated in the next life…

I love Italian food, so I would find it interesting to be an Italian (Napolitano specifically).

Or Scottish.
