Many of the “sterns” in user names come from such words as Western, but my “family tree” may include Guildenstern, stern6116, Vonsternberg, samstern@samstern.net, and jmstern. I’m apparently the only “vogel”, but since the second half of my screen name is German for bird, it’s possible that such Dopers as Snowbird and FlightlessBird Anglicized the family name upon arrival at Ellis Island, Botany Bay, or wherever. Similarly, “stern” is German for star, which potentially links me to the stellar Starguard, moonstarssun, et alii. Perhaps my closest “relatives” are KiwiStar21 and QueenRavenStar.
