For those of you who wish to repatriate slaves, would you be willing to demand that the governments of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya repay Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal for the Barbary Coast slave raids in the 16th and 17th Centuries?

I’ve never seen anyone on the Dope support repatriation for slaves. It’s a concept that died off centuries ago. A few support reparations. They’re definitely not the same thing.

Well… “centuries” is an exaggeration there. It was considered a possible “solution” to the black “problem” among most white American abolitionists one and one-half centuries ago (Caribbean exile was also big). It was advocated by some 20th-century black leaders such as Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X (though he changed his mind).
Not that it has ever made much sense from any perspective except the most stupid-racist. Black Americans have not been the “same people” as any African population for, yes, centuries.
To answer the OP, I don’t think any government is owed reparations. Reparations, if owed, are owed to the individuals who suffered.
That’s true. I was thinking more in terms of U.S. policy, like the establishment of Liberia and Lincoln’s apparent support for the idea at one point. But that’s more like ‘more than a century’ than ‘centuries.’
My family came to America in about 1910. My grandfather worked in coal mines until the auto companies seemed like a better career move.

Yeah, really. The OP needs to figure out which one of these two concepts he’s talking about - and if he’s talking about repatriation, he needs to cite Dopers supporting that idea. I’ve never seen it and I wonder if he’s drawing some odd implications from the South Africa debate.
What’s all this about repartitioning slaves? Seems to me after you’ve drawn and quartered a slave once, doing it again is redundant.
