Doraemon coming to U.S.

It’s only taken 45 years for one of the world’s most famous characters to be released in the U.S.A. on Disney XD. Quick synopsis for those that don’t know: Doraemon is a robot cat sent from a future grandson to help his present-day, lazy grandpa Nobita (Noby in U.S. version) as a kid. (Think “Back to Future” but messing with the past on purpose). Doraemon has access to numerous future inventions that is stored in a pocket universe that helps Noby go on crazy adventures with his friends and sometimes study in school.

Apparently the show will be produced with America culture and laws in mind. There are awhole host of changes to comply with cartoons aimed at children. Examples include: less sweets to promote healthier eating, forks because chopsticks are confusing, and erasing bandages and first-aid kits because…profit?

Living in China, Doraemon is very popular with the kindergarten set. My son started watching the show about 2 years ago after the teacher would finish the day with an episode of Doraemon. He would come home and beg to watch more which I was happy to let him do to improve his Chinese (there are Chinese dubs of all the original Japanese episodes). At least now my son’s cousins will know what he is talking about (except he’s moved on to Digimon).

I’d heard that Doraemon was one of the most popular animes in Japan so i managed to track down an episode and watched it. It seemed totally pointless to me. Maybe it’s meant for younger kids?

Pretty much. It would be comparable with typical kid cartoon fare like Magic School Bus or Phineas and Ferb minus the songs, the wit, or the spy stuff. It is filled with adventures, sci-fi gadgets, and occasionally danger but very little actual fighting (punching, kicking, shooting guns). Many of the episodes involve doing something weird around the house (candy farm, read people’s thoughts, go inside someone’s body). It is clearly aimed at kids older than pre-school (Dora and ilk) but not heavy action like those aimed at pre-teen boys (He-Man and kin).

It actually feels most like Duck Tales to me. An older more mature character going on adventures with kids involving crazy sci-fi gadgets.

Yes , the show maybe for younger kids… but it’s create a lot of innovative gadgets and from those gadgets, it created a lot of funny storylines, that is why it’s still very popular. Let look at other anime, once the storyline finished, it’s finished. Doraemon is different, since it based on innovative gadgets, story can go on forever…

I was a member of Cal Animage Alpha from 1991-1994. I remember watching fansubs of Doraemon at some of the meetings. I’m surprised it’s taken this long to make an English version.

I think my children like this  Doraemon HD
