A horrible fire shortly after midnight local time has killed at least 20 secondary school children in a dormitory in Guyana.
That’s very sad.
We can only hope that the causes are identified and that changes are made to prevent such a thing from happening again.
Flagged to request title change to 2023.
mmm
fixed
Google Maps, etc. indicates that this is a small town, basically in the middle of nowhere, and I’m guessing that a lot of the people who lived in outlying areas sent their children here so they could get an education.
One story I looked at said it was believed to have been “deliberately set”, although by whom or why was unknown.
RIP to the girls.
The killer survived.
From the article linked in the previous post:
The girls were locked in for the night, and a house mistress told police that in her panic she could not find the front door key. The building had metal bars on the windows preventing pupils from escaping through them.
I’d start with that. Jesus. Was this a school or a prison?
They’re still trying to decide whether to charge her? Um, yes. Charge her.
This totally sounds like a terrible situation, fire or no fire. Bet some of those girls are going to start talking about abuse, if they can.
