Dorothy Kilgallen's obsession with hands

I’ve been watching the b&w episodes of What’s My Line on GSN. Dorothy Kilgallen was a regular panelist who insisted on looking at the hands of the contestants.

Any idea why?

My husband is a serious WML fanatic, and he said that his WML group’s reasoning for this is that Dorothy looks at their hands because laborers tend to have rougher hands, with callouses and things, so she can get an idea as to whether or not they work with their hands or they’re in more of a white-collar job.

I really married a geek. Good thing I love him:).

What time do they show those? I love the old black-and-white episodes of What’s My Line? and I’ve Got a Secret. It’s like attending a cocktail party full of witty, well-dressed people.

It’s not really a game show unless it has Dorothy Kilgallen, Bennett Cerf, Arlene Francis and/or Kitty Carlisle.

I do not accept Betsy Palmer as a substitute.

3:30am EST on GSN.

I am continually surprised at how funny the show is even after so many years.

Example:

One contestant’s job was a dresser for chorus girls. Hal Block asked whether or not he would enjoy doing this job. The audience lost it. The contestant (a matronly-looking old gal) said, “I’m sure you would,” and the audience lost it again.

Also, Arlene Francis rocked.

Well, you’d never get that combination - according to my geek husband. Kitty was only a panelist three times.

Would Steve Allen or Martin Gabel do?

I’ve become slowly attached to this show. It should be my cup of tea anyway, but for some reason, it didn’t click with me. Now, I look forward to watching it as much as the Geek.

You know, I keep trying to convince the Geek to join the SDMB. Something tells me this would be the best thread to get him here, but then he’d see his wife calling him the Geek.

Ehh…I’ll send him the link anyway;).

GSN is currently showing eps in order (a lot of the kinescopes from the first two years were destroyed) and they’re in the Feb. 1953 shows now. Hal Block has already been fired, but is fulfilling his contract (and rather well, I’d say). Apparently his type of humor was a bit too brash for the times!

Bennet Cerf is “currently” on vacation and Steve Allen is taking his place.

I figured as much. I wasn’t sure since Miss Kilgallen was such an odd lady. From what I’ve read, the producers were going to fire her because she took the job way too seriously. Instead, they added Arlene Francis to counterbalance her and the rest is, of course, history.

Meh. Dorothy’s OK, but give me Joan Alexander from Name’s the Same.

That was after the first show, apparently. Although my husband said it’s an urban legend and that Dorothy was the only one to take the first show seriously, so they kept her for that reason - however, it’s been said that Arlene was always supposed to be on the show and couldn’t make it the first night. So Arlene was on the second show, then both were on the third.

Otto, I always knew you were odd;). Joan Alexander instead of Dorothy? What kind of crack you smokin’, man?
