If everyone double bags at the supermarket why dont 't they just buy bags that are twice as thick?
Because they don’t need all the bags that thick.
Why do people ask questions like these? I don’t double-bag unless I feel the need to. I very rarely double-bag.
Why on earth would you assume everyone does it?
Where would you buy twice-as-thick bags? I guarantee they’d be more than twice-as-expensive bags, due to low demand. There’s your answer.
Because the store owners are cheap as all get-out and will try to get away with giving crappy bags to the customers as long as they can, i. e., eternally?
My market double bags everything. I asked this question and they had no answer.
Double-thick bags won’t store as easily, and you can’t use 1/2 of one. If you double-bag, they store easily and you can always use half as many if you need/want to.
I haven’t double bagged in years and can’t remember the last time I even thought I needed to. Of course, they use plastic here, which I’ve never seen break (except sometimes the handles). But when I get paper bags, they don’t break, either.
Becuase even if the store spent the mone to by needlessly double-thick bags, idiot customers would still double bag with them. And then probably complain that the quadruple-bags are too thick.
When I was a checker, I was made aware many times of an ulterior motive for asking for double bags: The customers often admitted using them for trash bags at home.
Other than that, it undoubtedly helps people feel secure, many no doubt having experienced the wrath of a broken bag while carrying it outside.
