ITunes reports that downloads of the Band’s original version and Joan Baez’s cover of the song are at an all time high.

It’s a damn good song. It’s my mother’s favorite song. I remember her singing it to me when I was little. It’s a shame so many dumbasses are embracing it but I can’t really regret anything that makes the Band a little richer.
I do love the Band’s version of that song. And all the songs on that album.
Both of them.
Meh. Whatever. Sales of Chik-Fil-A skyrocketed after their owner was like “No fags!”
Gay marriage laws keep passing.
Racism won’t be over, but the removal of the rebel flag from Charleston will be a much bigger blow than a bunch of dickheads blasting “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” from their iPhones.
(I am sure, though, that Merneith’s mom is not a dickhead)
In other news, the Koch brothers company, Georgia Pacific, vows to halt the sale of Dixie paper cups.
My arm chair theory is the vast majority of the flags are being bought in bulk by opportunist that plan to resell these flags at an inflated rate.
Winn-Dixie grocery stores announce they are changing their name to Winn-Mason.
that is sad
sad because it is not at all suprising
Well now this: Warner Bros to stop sales of the Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee featuring Confederate flag.
A treasured piece of my childhood just died. And I’m ok with that.
I’m not prepared to equate the two just yet, but I am given to understand there is a reasonably healthy black market for Nazi memorabilia in Germany. People want their symbols.
It’s a shame the Southern Pride crowd clings to a symbol with which the most generous association is merely treason. There is plenty of other stuff they can point to–world class swamps, NASCAR, moonshine, fireflies, New Orleans, Dr. King, NASA, honeysuckle. Loads of stuff. They don’t even have to admit to Texas if they don’t want to.
Does any one (besides Texans) admit to Texas?
Can somebody start at the beginning and explain to me what the OP is supposed to mean? I get that sales of an old song have increased. That happens sometimes. Occasionally one-hit wonders get hot again 20 years later, that sort of thing.
But what else is going on? What does the OP (or others) assume is behind this particular uptick? And why does it matter versus the hundreds of other random upticks & downticks in sales of this or that thing?
It means there’s some resistance to putting the Confederate battle flag back into the museum. You’ve surely heard something about that, haven’t you?
Or maybe it’s about how much fun it is to go “Na, nana nana na, nana nana nana nana na …” while lamenting that the money’s no good.
It implies that there is backlash against the backlash currently going on against the flying of the confederate flag. It’s a stupid “Southern Pride” thing.
Sure you’re not thinking of Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’? Different band.
You can still buy all the Dixie Crystals sugar you want, because their logo isn’t really a Confederate flag.
This still doesn’t have enough context for me to make any sense of it. I surely haven’t heard anything about museums and flags recently.
Thank you. That makes complete sense. I had no idea any such backlash was more prevalent today than at any other time in the last decade, but OK.
