Dr. Christiane Northrup : Enlightened Doctor or New Age Bimbo?

PBS had a couple shows on last night focusing on Dr. Christiane Northrup and her theories on women’s health. I’d never heard of her before, and I’m generally down on the whole “oh women are SO different than men, and we need our own teachers and lawyers and golf coaches and fly fishing guides because it’s just DIFFERENT for women!” thing, but some of the stuff she said made sense to me.

I didn’t have time to watch the entire show, but I’m wondering if anyone out there has read her book “Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom” and/or read her newsletter. Any opinions? Quack or Genius?

I have read this book. She was a gynecologist for many years and became disenchanted at what was being done to investigate the huge increase in specific deseases currently plaguing women in North America. Endometriosis, ovarian cancer, cysts, etc, etc. At some point she decided to strike out and try some things on her own. She was unhappy at not being able to help the women she was seeing.

There is a lot of science, and chemistry and such in this book, you will learn a lot about the actual functioning of the female reproductive system. I am a 43 yr old woman who was quite well read and learned a great deal.

Whether or not you reach the same conclusions as she did is up to you. But she presents some interesting theories. And I have to admit to being quite skeptical.

Specifically, she implies that you can decrease your menstrual pain by changing your attitude to your period ( no easy task ). Sounded unlikely to me, but I admit to giving it a try and getting remarkable results. The other thing she suggested was that your mindset about your periods and being a woman in general will largely effect your experiencing of menopause. At 43 I am interested it this whole idea.

Many people will disagree with her conclusions but you will learn a great deal about your body by reading this book.

I should qualify this by saying I am not an especially science oriented person, having never studied them with any intensity.

I hope this helps you, remember it’s just my opinion.

I apologize for any spelling mistakes.

She claims that you can combat PMS with PMA?

Makes sense to me, Mojo. I never heard of Dr. Norman Vincent Peale having PMS…
