Do not stay in the youth hostels in Madrid, at least not the official ones - they have a 1.00 curfew, and the city doesn’t even come alive until midnight.
This page has links to many hostales (basically just lower-budget hotels) which will provide your own room and your own shower and toilet (if you want) for just a little more than the hostels would cost you anyway.
