Dr. Phil Romance Special

I switched off my tape after the Jonathan and Victoria segment. That’s the only reason I even taped this hour. I was hoping Dr. Phil would ream out Jonathan and Victoria. . . but, no. It was just this boring bit of spin doctoring. I think this couple was even more dislikable in image-repair mode! And Jonathan’s shirt was ugly, too. We wuz duped by the CBS promos! Dr. Phil didn’t even say the famous “Are you a jerk?” line in the show!!!

Nah, he did ask “are you a jerk” – but seemed oddly placated by the non-answer.

What a waste of an hour of my life. Thank god I was doing three other things at the same time.

I found it incredibly awkward. It was just painful. There seem to be some real dysfunctional undertones in their relationship, but obviously it works for them or they wouldn’t be doing it.

As for Dr. Phil, wtf? I used to see him on Oprah a few years ago, and he now seems so cheesy and spun. What a TV whore. Yuck.

I did find the part of the show with the woman going on dates interesting. Her body language and signals were so obvious to everyone except her. That was somewhat fascinating to me.

I only watched the * and Victoria segment. What was this one about? What was her body language saying?

Dr. Phil “I am a jock”.

Sure you are, Dr. Phil.

I DVR’d it so we just watched the * & Victoria bit. It was about 10 minutes of pure “I’m Dr. Phil and I’m superior” b.s. He wasn’t there to help them out. He wasn’t there to find out the root of the problems or give them any building blocks for their relationship. He wasn’t there to say “hey, maybe this is abusive and you should seek some counseling”. Nothing. He was the ringmaster of this ***heavily edited ** * Schadenfreude circus. I swear it was just pieces and bits and fragments of the conversation that were so interspliced that I have no idea what was actually said in any context. I wish there would’ve been a clock on the wall to demonstrate the continuity problems of that segment.

This woman was very successful, beautiful, intelligent- yet she couldn’t get a date to save her life, and she didn’t understand why. So they videotaped her on a date, and she had a permanent frown, her body was very closed and guarded, and she kept giving one-word coy answers, I guess she thought she was being cute and mysterious. After the date they had 10 men look at the video and they all said that she was giving out signals that she wasn’t interested and they wouldn’t ask her out again if they were on the date. She didn’t realize that she was doing these things until she saw the tape.
Then they sent her out on a date with Dr. Phil telling her what to say and do through an earpiece, and she did much better, and it was a much more positive experience for her.

Yeah – I thought maybe it didn’t make sense because I was having an IM conversation at the same time – then I realized, no, this really doesn’t make a lot of sense.

What do you think the editing was about? What were they leaving out and why?

I thought the same thing, though now I can’t tell if * is really that much of an ass or not. He did say he made a mistake and felt bad about it. I know I’ve done some pretty bad stuff and felt like an ass afterwards, maybe the samething happened here.

So how did that guy work out with his sex contract? That was pretty funny.

The sex contract was rewritten to be a homage to his fiancee and a declaration of his undying love for her. After he read it to her, in a heavily decorated fantasy scene with him reproposing to her and showing her the spendy wedding ring he’d be giving to her courtesy of Dr. Phil, she said, “That didn’t even say anything about sex”, and he said he wasn’t worried about that anymore. That segment was very nice and romantic and everything, but I didn’t see how it resolved the serious issues they have and I thought it was rather pointless. She said yes, though.

I caught the segment with Jonathan & Victoria. I too thought it was quite disjointed, with answers not being properly matched up with questions, answers and dialogues heavily edited, and facial expressions reacting to something just said that we did not hear. I’m not familiar with Dr. Phil’s show, but I can’t recall off the top of my head any other interview I’ve ever seen that showed its seams quite so obviously.

I’ve always believed that in high-pressure situations, the real you comes out. I may be wrong, but I believe Jonathan demonstrated quite well on national television what he really thinks of Victoria. He’s been playing nice with her since, but that’s just a facade. Eventually, if they stay together, she’ll see more of his contempt for her.

IMO, of course.

I didn’t watch this at all, but in the ads, it seemed to me that * was even more Botoxed than on TAR. True, or not?

Well, that’s the most insightful thing that’s ever been said about * and Victimia! Why didn’t the great expert, Dr. Phil, catch onto this?
