I do have a couple of questions for you all about the TV episode:
on the wallpaper in the haunted house, it said ‘duck’ (a couple of times). I think Sally had to duck to avoid a missile. Who threw it?
the Doctor said that the Weeping Angels could move ‘really fast’ when unobserved. When Sally is first studying the wall, they have loads of time. Why couldn’t they get her then?
I’ve been puzzling over that and a few other things. My theory is that they wanted Sally to lead them to the Tardis (they’d seen her reveal her link to the Doctor, maybe they knew he was a Time Lord). I presume an angel threw the rock - to make Sally curious? But how did they know she’d find the Tardis?
This maybe explains why they apparently let her have (?) the Tardis key. But why couldn’t they have kept the key and entered the Tardis themselves after Sally had located it?
I loved this episode, even though it scared the crap out of me. I actually screamed (well, yelped really loudly) at the computer screen…how embarrassing.
I was confused about the thrown rock as well - Mr. Bunny speculated that the statue had thrown the rock to try and knock Sally out so it could just walk up and touch her without her turning around. I got nothing for why it didn’t just sneak up behind her, though.
The Weeping Angels are some of the creepiest baddies I’ve ever seen - even if they don’t actually kill you. I liked the Doctor’s explanation: “They send you back in time and let you live to death.” Had no idea they were actual actors! What is it with Moffat and his ability to turn perfectly ordinary things into terrifying monsters (he was also responsible for the gas mask zombies in Season 1)??
I know a lot of folks find the Doctor a little insufferable when he starts with the “wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey” talk, but I liked it. “This is my Timey-Wimey Detector. It goes ding when there’s stuff.” Also enjoyed Sally’s line (paraphrasing): “Sadness is happiness for deep people.”
And add me to the list of those that are very anxiously awaiting next week!!! I am a teensy bit spoilered on Utopia, so I’ll hide this…
Apparently Captain Jack and the Doctor are not exactly thrilled to see each other and have a bit of a quibble. During this discussion, many things are brought to light, like whether or not the Doctor knew Jack was still alive when he left him behind in Season 1, and how Jack got off the Game Station. The Doctor also tells him the whole story of exactly what happened to Rose, which I am thrilled to hear - I’m hoping poor Martha gets to overhear this explanation, as I imagine it would go a long way toward making her more sympathetic to the Doctor’s continued mooning over her. As far as Martha knows now, Rose is “safe” and “with her family”, she needs to know the whole story.
Oh, and also the Doctor is not happy to find out that Jack is now immortal.
A kind request: Can we please spell it “Doctor Who” in the thread titles? You can’t do a search for “Dr. Who” and so after searching and finding nothing, I inadvertently started a duplicate thread.
Agreed! A wee snippet, but according to Outpost Gallifrey:
John Barrowman gets his name in the opening credits for the rest of the season! Wooo! Jack is back, baby! Barrowman himself is apparently ecstatic about this, as befits a total Who-nerd! Finally, Captain Jack Harkness is raised to the status of Companion! Wooo
I have to say this, but I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who as long as I can remember watching television. My parents terrified me with the show in the Pertwee era, and the damned thing went off the air with McCoy when I was at University.
I’m at the stage where I’ve seen every extant episode (they are pretty much all on Youtube, btw), I’ve listened to and watched all the reconstructions of missing episodes, and I’ve read almost all the books.
And then an extremely talented Who-nut managed to persuade the BBC to make new Who. First season they did well to get Chris Eccleston who is a great actor to do the job, but the genius bit is getting David Tennant (a complete Whovian, BTW) to actually be the Doctor.
Have you seen the Confidential for Blink? DT is the director of it, and it is great - it’s full of old Who clips and otherwise lovely. Much, much better than your usual run-of-the-Mill Confidential. PM me if you’d like a copy
After having spent the first 12 years of my life in a house across the street from an old cemetery, I already had a healthy, deep seated, irrational paranoia of statuary.
This episode was not appreciated in the shamrock household and I watched most of it peeking through my fingers and forcing the cat to stay on my lap as a lookout (because, of course, turning it off wasn’t an option).
Lord Almighty, I am 38 years old and spent 1/2 the night allllmmooosssttt asleep then I would feel the need to check over my shoulder - just in case. :smack:
