Dr. Who Companions--Who Do You Hate?

I wouldn’t really describe it as a crush, but I was sad when he died. I thought he was kind’ve cool (yes, I now realise he was a dork, but… he WAS cool!).

I HATED Mel. Peri occupied a certain teen-fantasy area for me (although it was at that awkward time when you intrigued but embarrassed to be intrigued. Y’know?)

I liked Ace, but I agree, for a tough girl she was pretty un-tough! And Leela could have been a bit MORE savage if you ask me! she was way too civilised, dammit!

I loathed Turlough. When we first see him, he steals a car and blames it on a friend. He failed to assassinate the Doctor because he was too much of a snivelling wimp. Turlough was annoying, deceitful, and always out for himself.

Mel didn’t really annoy me. But, I couldn’t see any good points. She isn’t smart, or a skilled fighter. Her bit seemed to be being a 45 year old who dressed and acted like she was a virginal 15 year old.

I liked Adric. He was smart. A good companion should be able to do more than get captured and scream.

Didn’t Ace sometimes carry explosives? I know she did in Battleground (Battlefield?). ‘You can read that?’ ‘It’s my handwriting. It says Dig hole here. Ace, bomb.’

Currently WHYY is only on the second Peri episode. My assessment of her is so far limited to ‘Looks good in bikini.’

I hated Terlow. Wanker.
I liked Peri, but she never got naked enough.
Lela stabbin’ at everyone got a little old.
Jamie was really dense at times.
Harry Sullivan is an idiot! But one of my faves.

I didn’t mind looking at Peri, but to listen to her speak. I couldn’t tell if she was breathing hard or about to have an orgasm. Or both!

Leela, one work. Yum!

Ditto for Sara Jane. Yum! Saw a fairly recent photo, she has aged very gracefully.

Cheers,
Vega

Oh man, this is a toughie. There were so many annoying twerps over the years!

But I’ll go with Peri, for the following reasons:

  1. Her Amerrrrrrrican accent
  2. Her incessant wheedling and whining
  3. My sweet, sweet Fifth Doctor had to sacrfice himself for her. For her!

I don’t really mind the actress, though. I remember seeing Nicola Bryant in “Blackadder’s Christmas Carol,” where she was pretty funny (although her character was qiite similar to Miranda Richardson’s Queenie).

Other hated companions include Mel, the bland Victoria & Katarina, and Adric, although I did feel sorry when he died.

Favorites: Tegan, Turlough, Jamie, Zoe, Sarah Jo, Nyssa, Liz Shaw, Romana I, Romana II, and to some degree Harry. I also liked the three original companions, Susan, Ian and … um, the teacher woman.

And while not really companions, my favorite Dr. Who allies were UNIT members Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sgt. Benton and poor messed up Mike Yates.

Oy … this is a geek test, isn’t it? Sigh. Passed again!

Choie, I agree with almost all of your post. Though I’m not familiar with Victoria and Katerina. Which Doctor where they with?

As for the Fifth Doctor, he’s not bad to look at. Also the least condescending of the Doctors. I’m ashamed to admit I like the Eighth Doctor even more, even though I’ve only seen him in that horrendous TV-movie. Speaking of which, there’s another annoying companion for the pile. Grace was awfully dimwitted for a supposed surgeon. But I like the Doctor so much that I don’t mind watching it. <swoon>

And don’t be afraid of the geekness. Surrender to it. Let it surround you like a warm bath. It’ll be a weight off your shoulders. And then you can be…one of US! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! <cue lightning effect>

Aw thanks, KCSuze. You’re right, and I shall deny my geekiness no longer.

I think Katarina was with the First Doctor (William Hartnell) – I seem to recall she was tragically killed or sacrificed or somethin’. And IIRC, Victoria hung out with the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), and seemed even more like a damsel in distress than the usual screaming girly girls, which is saying something.

Ooh! I forgot Sara King, or whatever her name was – the formerly evil companion played by Jean Marsh. Liked her, although she only appeared in one or two episodes. And she was married to Jon Pertwee (the Third Doctor), too! Cool.

OT: I adored Peter Davison dating back to his role on All Creatures Great and Small, so I was delighted when I saw him as the Fifth Doctor. He brought so much energy and earnestness to the role. Also? Really really cute and dashing. I admit to jealousy over the attention paid to Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, while my boy Doc #5 is ignored. I never saw the Fox movie with Paul whatsisname’s Doc #8. Boy, I’d love for Sean Pertwee to be Doc #9, if such creature were to exist. Wouldn’t that be appropriate?

There must be a thread devoted to our favorite Time Lords, right? I’ve gotta hunt it down to see what Dopers like in their Doctors – whether it’s I’s crankiness, II’s neuroses, III’s regal bravado, IV’s eccentricity, V’s enthusiasm, VI’s obnoxious egocentrism, or … hmmm, I don’t remember enough of Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor to pigeon-hole him.

my hearty commiserations, but Doctor #9 is Christopher Eccleston

I presume Sean Pertwee is Jon’s son? Or…

McCoy’s doctor had two phases: he started off absentminded, avuncular and slightly clownish, but he pushed to make the character darker, more manipulative and full of secrets.

I think my favourite part about the Seventh Doctor (apart from my memories of him on Vision On) was that because he was the middle of the 13 incarnations, his role was to set things up for the other Doctors’ travels (and tidy up some things after they’d gone). That includes the future incarnations.

He therefore supposedly would’ve had a limited form of precognition. He knew some things that hadn’t happened yet, that he hadn’t been involved with yet, due to, I presume, the nature of time travel.

Adric - the all-time worst, easily. “The cloister bells!”

Also was annoyed by Tegan (although I liked the actress) because of her harsh (fake) Australian accent. I read once that, though she is Aussie in real life, they wanted her to speak in that horrible voice.

All-time fave - Sarah Jane, goofy Andy Panda overalls and all!

Also liked Leela and Romana I.

All-time fave Doctor - Tom Baker, no doubt, but then he was the “first” Doctor for me and no one else could compare. Peter Davison will always be that screwup Tristan Farnon for me. I also liked Paul McGann in the TV movie and thought he was very impressive, but I guess he hated the role and only did it for the money or something.

They’re bringing back Doctor Who? Holy schlamoly! Christopher Eccleston?? Oh, baby!! faints

If you can’t quite remember who you loath the most, they’re all here

Adric? Blech!

:mad:I hate… No wait… I DESTEST ROMANA! She was usless and pathetic and to much like a whiny girl to actually BE a companion, if i was the doctor i would boot her out at the next black hole i passed.
My impression: “Oh look at me! I’m romana and everyone thinks i like the doctor! OOH!” :smack: :dubious:

Personally Sylvester Mcoy always reminds me of Rowan Atkinson…

No… I think you mean the Harry Sullivan was AN IMBECIEL!

Apparently the Doctor is not the only one to regenerate.

I managed to miss the McCoy years which is probably just as well because Bonnie Langford is annoying in any form, but I’ll buck the trend here by saying that I liked Adric but hated…

…Rose. Much as I was glad to have the Doctor back, Billie Piper and that stupid, stupid haircut never really did it for me.

Elisabeth Sladen looked good to the end - she passed away in april this year. One of the good companions

Wow, this thread is from before we knew anything about the new series! And I posted exactly what I was going to post when I saw this thread just now!

I’m not sure if he counts as an official companion or not, but I never cared for Sgt. Yates from the UNIT-era episodes. For someone who’s supposed to be an elite military commando, he spent an awful lot of time getting kidnapped, captured, or brainwashed - he came off seeming more helpless than Sarah Jane Smith being forced to make her way up a slight incline without falling to her doom.

Holy crap, this was back when I had my old username. I’d forgotten how long I’ve been here.

Anyhoo, I liked Romana. I always liked the companions who weren’t afraid to stand up to the Doctor or give him some of his own back. Still hate Peri, though.

I can’t remember…did the Doctor ever fight zombies?

What?! Noooooooooooo! :frowning:
