Dr. Who Companions--Who Do You Hate?

Barbara Wright was the teacher

I freakin’ hated Peri. I think she was created just to piss off the American fan base. If there was anything John Nathan-Turner loved doing it was pissing Dr. Who fans off. JNT single-handedly crashed and burned the show. I hate to speak ill of the dead but he was a true jackass, as far as Doctor Who goes.

Adric? Ick. But still not as bad as Peri.

I’ve only just started watching the new series, never having seen the old, and I kept reading through this thread expecting to see some mention of one of the new companions. Then I finally noticed the date. :smack:

In the new series Donna is annoying as hell.

I couldn’t stand Peri. Mostly I couldn’t stand to listen to her talk in that screeching fake American accent.

This thread is just amazing - people talking about how the New Who is coming up and all that. I admit that while I like most of the new companions, Martha Jones can get on my nerves sometimes. She thinks she knows better than the Doctor!

Adric, followed closely by Martha and Donna.

Adric was the Wesley Crusher of Doctor Who.

Ugggh I hated Adric too.

Yeah, that was kind of the problem. Martha was just way too perfect in way too many ways.

Way.

She’s not American? :stuck_out_tongue:

I recognise now that she has that strange nasal accent that British actors put on when trying to play an American.

I can’t hate Martha because I think Freema Agyeman is gorgeous. I liked all the recent companions though I think there was too much Rose. She got like 18 or 20 send offs and a nice human Doctor to play with in their own universe.

I have a hard time remembering the companions from the older series, though I have to say that I watched Ark in Space recently and found Sarah Jane to be fairly uninteresting.

Shun the unbeliever!

Shun-n-n-n-n!

Hate Donna but liked her dad as a companion - Bernard Cribbins was the Doctors (Peter Cushing) companion in Daleks’ Invasion Earth: 2150AD

Agreed. But everyone always harps on Rose, who really wasn’t nearly that bad. Sure, she became Mary Suish at the end, but compared to Donna, she was a breath of fresh air.

And Martha was the best. Unrequited crush works really well for companions. And you want a companion who can think for herself. And, yes, she was absolutely gorgeous.

While I’ve watched some old Who, I haven’t watched them in order and do not have a feel for the companions yet.

I didn’t much likemSarah Jane either in her original run. It seemed to ms she was always weepy.

Are you kidding? Donna was awesome! At the very least she showed more character development than any other Who character, past or present. Plus, she was in the *Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead *sequence, my favorite New Who story.

But I agree with you about Martha. She’s still my favorite.

I don’t mind Donna at all, and the Runaway Bride episode, where she is at her most annoying, has some genuinely funny parts. But I loved Donna because she was the Doctor’s friend, and made that very clear. Not in love with him and I was getting a little heartsick over all that anyway.

Don’t talk to me about the character development, though! Don’t get me wrong, it was great, except for the GIANT RESET BUTTON. I hope hope hope they will readdress that at some time (note I have not seen Season 6 so don’t spoil me or I kill you).

It wasn’t so much a reset button as it was a death.

Either way, it totally breaks my heart to watch. But then, I can’t even watch the End of Time anymore - I watched it twice and that was enough.

Oh! Of course - I don’t like Amy. I certainly don’t hate her, but she is incredibly flighty and definitely not my favorite. She’s almost like a decoration with the Doctor.

I’ve only ever seen the new series, so I’ll say that my least favorite is Rose. She just came across as very whiny and needy. I remember in the second-last episode of the first season, she was separated from the Doctor, who was off fighting Daleks in the year 1 million or whatever, and she thought she’d never see him again. She wasn’t just upset about not seeing him, but upset about going back to her old life. She was whining to Mickey about how she couldn’t go back to the old life of going to work everyday and staying in the same place, and Mickey got annoyed and said, “Why not? It’s good enough for the rest of us!” And I thought he was right o be annoyed. It was clear that Rose did not have any sort of “life” apart from the Doctor and so she was essentially nothing without him.

I also hated the romance angle. I don’t mind the idea of the Doctor falling in love, but I couldn’t believe he would go for someone so immature and needy. Although Martha, with her crush on him, could be clingy at times, it was clear that she was a mature young adult who had a life of her own.

My favorite was Donna because she was the anti-Mary Sue. She could be annoying and bossy, but she was definitely a strong character, who showed a soft side when needed. I loved the way her character grew during their travels, which made her ultimate fate so sad.
