I am a bleeding heart liberal. I was in Viet Nam. Many of my age peers protested the war, as was their right. Many protested the draft, as was their right. What I want to know is, how many people went to jail rather than be drafted? Mohammed Ali does not count, since he did not go to jail. How many heros refused to be drafted and went to jail. Out of all the millions protesting, I have been able to find one name. This strikes me as rather strange, given the numbers involved, so it must be the fact that my bleeding heart liberal brain is ineffective. I am sure that many conservatives can give me a better answer than 1.
David Harris, then husband of Joan Baez was sentenced to 3 years for refusing induction. That’s the highest profile person I can recall off the top of my head. Since his wife was a popular singer, she helped publicize his plight quite a bit. Having a baby while your husband is in jail also helps.
