Dragon Age 2: Earbuds Not Working

I got a copy of Dragon Age 2 yesterday, with no problems (on DirectX 9.0 graphics). Just tried to continue my game, and the sound shuts down when I plug my earbuds into the laptop…no music, no dialogue, nothing. Everything else works with the earbuds, youtube et al., just not Dragon Age 2.

Tried shutting down, resetting, fiddling with the Dragon Age 2 settings, and unclicking the Volume Mixer’s option to “allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”. Nothing. Would be much obliged for a solution.

What was the problem, exactly, in case someone else has a similar issue (and also because I’m curious!).

Apparently the volume for “Dragon Age 2” was muted whenever I put the earbuds in, and Dragon Age wasn’t coming up when I clicked on the Volume icon…so I just had to open the Volume Mixer and unmute.
