Last night was the series premiere episode of Nip/Tuck on FX.
It is a very good show, 2 Plastic Surgeons in Miami, FL, their lives and their Medical Practice.
The actors say Shit in the dialogue, ? How does FX get away with that? I have heard Shit said by actors on the show Lucky and the Shield. And I’m not talking about inference, I heard clearly the word Shit - said 4 or 5 times.
I don’t really care if they use that word, it just shocked me that it was used on Network - not HBO or Showtime and during Primetime Hours.
I actually like FX Network, but just wondering - How they get away with using that word?
I’m not sure but it was said on an ep of South Park 167(?) times. I don’t think they’ve said it since.
For the record, South Park is aired on Comedy Central.
Because it’s cable there’s no real governing body over what they can air. There are, quite naturally, effective limitations. If Nickelodian suddenly had episodes of Spongebob Squarepants where he began swearing like a sailor there would be a rather intense backlash. But for adult dramas airing late at night on FX (or shows that have gone through backlash and out the other side like South Park) there’s a lot more they can get away with. You’ll note, for example, that TCM doesn’t edit movies and if you get out of the Hayes code period that language, violence, and nudity will show up. FX Movies shows films uneditted late at night as well.
Right now FX seems to be trying to push for an adult drama style audience ala HBO and Showtime and part of that is throwing in adult content. They seem to still be skittish about it. The shows that push the boundry air after 10pm and I noticed on the Shield that the more extreme content seemed to be rather tightly contained for possible editting.
