does anyone have the ability to control there dreams…
trying to look at your hands whilst dreaming is very hard
why???
Here’s a FAQ on [url[=“http://www.lucidity.com/LucidDreamingFAQ2.html#dreamcontrol”]lucid dreaming. Lucidity in dreams doesn’t always imply control, as the FAQ states, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Dream yoga is also an ancient Buddhist practice, used to train the mind to recognize the intermediate Bardo states of being. There are practices that help one learn how to gain control of the dream state.
Being a sadly deluded hooha, I can’t say I’m any good at it. There are several books available, though. http://www.snowlionpub.com is a fine source if you’re interested. Do Dream yoga as a search there, they’ve got a few.
An extra bracket, Rasa: Here ya go.
I have.
I have been able to occasionally control my dreams for years. One of the books I read (30 days to Lucid Dreaming?) said that taking vitamin C right before sleep can help. Also, asking yourself, “Is this a dream?” throughout the day can help. When you are dreaming later, you may ask yourself & then respond, “Why yes, Self, I AM DREAMING!”
If used that one before and it does work. Also, if you wake in the middle of a night from a nightmare, changing position in bed will help avoid the same dream when you fall asleep again. Keeping still, of course, is useful if you’ve woken from a nice dream.
For an interesting bit on dream control… read the book Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman, by the wacko physicist himself.
Seems that in MIT, Feynman was subjected to (gasp) humanities classes. Well, first he took astronomy which counted as a humanities class for some unknown reason.
Then he took philosophy.
Feynman thought philosophy was a big joke, but he decided for a project he would observe his dreams.
He describes in detail what he did in order to become aware that he was dreaming and then observe the surroundings and then attempt to gain an understanding for how he could control his somnabulatory manifestations of consciousness.
The book is a gas besides this nifty story too.
I highly recommend it.
My problem is, whenever I realize I’m dreaming and try to take control of things, I just wake up.
You and me both, Weird_AL_Einstein. The instant the thought that I am dreaming occurs to me, it’s too late to do anything about it.
I seem to have kind of a hit-or-miss dream control. Sometimes, very rarely, I can get myself to dream on a certain topic, or I can realize I’m dreaming and keep on dreaming - and be in control of the action.
I find it much more frequent, however, that I dream I’ve woken up, only to wake up again a few minutes later. (Well, poorly worded, but you know what I mean.)
Most of us really don’t remember what we dream, anyway - try keeping paper and pen right by your bed and writing down your dreams as soon as you wake up. You can also write down your desired topic before you go to bed.
I’ve heard that practice makes perfect with this - but I confess I’m too lazy to try.
A good friend of mine has a certain degree of control over her dreams. It’s natural to her; I don’t think that she ever did anything to develop this talent. (Over a long series of dreams, she taught herself how to fly - at first, she could only hover briefly a few inches off the ground, but she can now fly at will in dreams.)
It seems the only control I have over my dreams is the uncanny ability to wake up RIGHT before I have sex. DAMMIT!
