Dreamfall - The Longest Journey irritates me!

After a recent thread on video games over in the Cafe, I was reminded of the spit-sputtering mess of Dreamfall - The Longest Journey. ARGH!

This is a very nice game, as was the original The Longest Journey. Both are nice. I like them. But the ENDING (or lack thereof) for the sequel just infuriates me.

To start with there are three characters.

Our main character, Zoe Castillo, is fun and amusing and is quite bright and gets the job done. 90% of the game follows her adventures. She’s not perfect, but is talented and it’s fun to play her in her oddball life and crazy adventure.

Our secondary character, April Ryan, is from the first game. 10% of the game follows her. She’s tough and capable and experienced. Her lack of serious screentime and general pissy0girl attitude basically make me want to strangle her with her own socks.

The third character, Kian Alvane (though I don’t recall they EVER mentioned his last nahe game) gets approximately negative 14% of the game time. IIRC, he shows up for exactly 3 scenes, none of which last longer than five minutes unless you get lost. Theoretically, you’re watching his moral dilemma and see him change his opinions about the good-religion-with-selfish-secular-leaders. However, since you see him so little, it completely lacks any moral force.

As another note, the combat system sucks so hard I thought I would die.

The ending, however, takes the cake. After having dozens of obnoxious half-leadings and possibly clues to… something, the game just ends. Ooops! To bad! Buy the sequel!

Asstard game designers.

Yeah, that totally pissed me off.

I like endings that are definite endings (as I said in the other thread). Hell, even if it was clear she had died, and April had died… except if April had died that would’ve spit on the first game (I mean, it was obvious that the old lady April met was old April, and the last names made it clear that April and Kian got married somewhere in there*).

Even if they HAD spit on the first game I would’ve been only mildly annoyed with it as long as it ended.

I don’t play video games much, I don’t have time and until I recently bought a computer I simply couldn’t play new games but I was intrigued by Dreamfall and what I’d heard of it (I’d never played The Longest Journey but I was able to buy a set of them both, so I played one right after the other).

Oh, and the sequel was only announced early this year. Who knows if I’ll be able to play it and find out what happens.

As for the combat it didn’t bother me. But then again, I don’t play games much so as long as I can muddle through and it isn’t too irritating or hard to do I don’t really have an opinion.

*Obvious because I played them one right after the other.

Well, combat bothered me because it was so limited. Frankly, as pathetic as it was, they might as well have left it out entirely.

Anyway, I wouldn’t have minded if it was a 2-part story, and one part just happened to end, so that the characters would soon embark upon a new adventure. But they accomplished NOTHING in the ENTIRE friggin GAME!. It was absolutely a waste of time from end to end!

Ahh yes, I can see that. It did seem like sort of an addition ‘well… people like to fight, so lets just toss in this liiittle bit of fighting to pacify them!’

Didn’t really add much to the game.
