Are you male or female? Anyway for men some slim fit jeans but not skinny (Levi’s 514 is a good style) in a darker wash, flannel buttondowns and plain t-shirts with some cool colored sneakers, something like this, check out the other New Balance Classics, they come in tons of colors. Denim jackets and army fatigue style jackets are really popular.
For women, black leggings with floral oversized tank/tunics or loose knit oversized sweaters with boots. Big loose scarfs in cool prints are still very popular and so versatile, buttondown chambray shirts and loose floral minis.
Shorts are good, try some colored khaki ones, plaid looks great as well. If you are down at the beach, board shorts are acceptable anywhere. Converse are always classic, and some decent flip flops are great for the beach communities. At the end of the day the others are right, though, no one cares. Be comfortable, casual and wear sunglasses!
It gets chilly at night which is why I mentioned the plaid shirts, my husband wears the rolled up over t-shirts. Hoodie or a windbreaker/track jacket and you are set!
No, seriously, nobody cares. LA’s not uptight; it’s a pretty easygoing city where you can dress however you want, and nobody cares. If you want to know how to not dress like a doofus in general, just don’t make any major noob mistakes like white sneakers, or sneakers with shorts with your white tube socks pulled up. And I shouldn’t have to say this, but no fanny packs! My mother, who has lived in LA since 1968 had a fanny pack phase which was painful for all of us. Ironic tees are fine if you want, but don’t tuck them into your jeans, don’t wear a cell phone holster, don’t wear an “I <3 LA” tee shirt, unless you are a young hipster, in which case no one will think you are a tourist, but will think you are lame. But if you want to dress like a doofus, it’s LA; nobody cares.
I’m originally from LA and now living in Southwest Virginia (Blacksburg), and I think Virginians are waaaaay more uptight about clothes and whatnot than we were in LA. I mean, yeah, Blacksburg fashion sense seems to involve a lot of Maroon and Orange t-shirts, but there’s a large subset of folks here who actually seem to put a lot of effort in what they wear. I mean… people wear collared shirts and nice pants just to go to dinner here??! What???
I’d just go with whatever you’re used to wearing, provided you’re not a complete slob, but if you’re from Virginia, particularly Northern Virginia, I don’t think you’d need to worry.
