Dumb question: Do people dress up for shows in Las Vegas?

Drum Goddess and I are headed to our first Las Vegas vacation next week. We have tickets to a few shows already purchased. How do people dress? Coat and tie / dress? Dockers and a polo? Shorts and a tshirt?

Thanks, y’all.

I’m mildly curious as well since I’m taking my first vacation in Vegas later this year myself.

Suits and ties are not typical for most shows. Dockers and polo shirts for men should be acceptable almost anywhere but many people go even lower than that. Las Vegas isn’t a formal town these days for the masses. I went a couple of years ago and didn’t bring any formal clothes or need any in the slightest. It would take a special event to require them. My father went a couple of weeks ago after a multi-decade break and he was amazed how informal almost everywhere there had gotten compared to the 1970’s.

It is high summer and you will have to walk a lot. You would be sweltering in a suit and tie. Make sure you bring comfortable shoes as well. Even the indoor spaces are gigantic. DOn’t get me wrong, some high style types do wear summer suits or light sportcoats but they aren’t really needed. However, you have to skip the dress shoes for something more comfortable like brown walking shoes.

Also I’m wondering if this is more appropriate for IMHO or Cafe Society.

I’ve been to Vegas 5 times.
I wore a tracksuit everywhere.
I saw Cher :), Barry Manilow , Penn + Teller :D, Cirque du Soleil  and ate in many restaurants.

Vegas shows are not formal, but people do dress classy. Like Shagnasty said. The ladies dress nicely, sensually nice, not sluttily if I can describe it that way. People look nice, it is fun to people watch a little bit. It makes for a nice, occasional and special date night out. Since we are a 600 mile drive away, we go every few years.

Add: definitely a dress for the lady.

High end nightclubs will have a dress code but it’s usually collared shirt, no jeans no sneakers. If you go to places that require a jacket and tie you probably shouldn’t be talking to lowlifes like us.

My daughter lives in Vegas, and gets free tickets for weekday shows that haven’t sold out. (The casinos like people in the audience.) Definitely not dress up.

Now some of the people on stage definitely don’t dress up :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, gods no. The restaurants may have dress codes, but they don’t enforce them much. As long as you aren’t trying to see the show in a swimsuit you’ll be fine. Jeans, shoes and a collared shirt will get you in anywhere.

when I was in vegas there was a few of the old guys and they complained that the casinos were too casual these days (see de niros slight rant about the corporate vegas at the end of casino) … people dressed and acted the casinos were better when the “Chicago” guys ran the town

Now the new thing is for people to rent suits and try to get the old style "vegas or “Sinatra” look
(in fact there was a ciroc vodka commercial that demonstrated this )

I recommend you do whatever sounds like fun to you. Sure, casual clothes are fine most of the time, but personally, when we go to Vegas, we make a point of doing it up at night.

I think dressing up in a classy sport coat and nice shirt and slacks and taking her Orneryness to a nice restaurant and a fun show makes for an evening we don’t get at home. Women go crazy for a sharp dressed man, don’cha know.

Besides, when it comes to her Orneryness, dressing up means underneath is sexy lingerie and that means dinner and the show are all just… anticipation.

Hey if wearing a track suit everywhere is your thing, then party on, Vegas is possibilities.

I wore long lightweight pants and a short sleeved top to any show I went to, and my husband wore long pants and a polo shirt.

We both brought sweaters because even when it’s hot outside, the AC in some places makes it very cold.

My wife and I went to see Elton John at Caesar’s Palace a few months ago (they periodically give free tickets to local teachers), and there were people dressed in all types of clothes, from shorts and t-shirts to suits and evening gowns. I went halfway: a nice collared shirt, but with shorts. Heh.

They did take away any purses or bags and made you pick them up after the show. I don’t quite get that. But they didn’t seem to care how anyone was dressed as long as they had clothes.

Got married in Vegas some years ago. After a nice private ceremony, wife and I went to dinner, and then out to a show - all in our formal wedding attire. Saw a few other couples doing the same.

I have been known to put on a tie to go to Applebee’s, so don’t ask me…

The last time I was in Vegas was about a year ago and it seemed to me that the average level of attire - at least in the evening - was a little higher than previous trips. That said, I had some really hectic scheduling and had to wear jeans/tee shirt to a fairly upscale ($250/head) restaurant and had no issues.

People that insist on wearing jeans all the time are boring (sorry silenus, and Hawaiin shirts are right out! ). I like dressing up now and then. No one says you have to wear a tuxedo, but it’s enjoyable to at least put on a button down shirt and some slacks, and no doubt your woman might appreciate it.

Track suits might make me go into apoplexy.

How do you sign up for that?

My first time in Las Vegas, I went to a show wearing a nice pair of trousers, a business shirt, and a sportcoat. That was fine–some folks were fancier, some less so. Since then, I’ve attended shows in whatever I happened to be wearing that day. It all works.

I was in Vegas last month. The two shows I went to (Blue Man Group and Penn and Teller) both had 90% of the audience in shorts and t-shirts.
