Vegas is Calling - What to pack?

Pretty much a Dockers / golf shirt guy - Any special coat/tie requirements for restaurants, shows or clubs I should be aware of. I don’t intend to drag any of that along if I don’t have to.

It depends on where you are going but most places (at least the places I go to) don’t have dress codes. Some of the clubs do but I rarely go to clubs, the lines tend to suck. If you are interested in going to any clubs, check the websites, they usually have any dress requirements listed. For example Tabu at the MGM says:

Most resturants don’t have dress codes either, except the shirt/shoe thing. Once again, the websites will probably note any requirements.

Slee

We just got back yesterday. We stayed at the Bellagio. several of the restaurants there required coat and tie. We avoided them. I didn’t see dress codes anywhere else.
The weather is HOT, over 100°F during the day, in the 80s at night.
We stayed in shorts and tees most of the time during the day, and a bit more civilized in the evening, but not much. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Remember to pack some luck, we forgot ours. :smack: The most luck I had was finding a quarter in the airport parking lot!

Dockers and polos will do you fine for 95% of anywhere in Vegas. I don’t recall any shows that have a dress code. As other dopers have stated, some restraunts have a coat and tie rule, but those are more the exception than the norm.

If you seem to run a little on the chilly side, you may consider a single sweater. Inside the casinos is cool for some people. Also, if you intend to spend a lot of time outside, I’d suggest a light weight rain jacket. We don’t get a lot of it, but when we do it comes down hard.

Pasties.

Just went a week ago and I spent most of my time there in shorts and tshirt. As noted above it mostly depends on what you want to do while there.

Dockers and golf shirt will be fine for any shows, most clubs, and all but the toniest restaurants.

I’d recommend good walking shoes. If you’re going to do any casino hopping, realize that those suckers are a lot further apart than they look because they’re so ungodly huge.

Also, it being August, you’ll probably want a lot more clothes than you think. If you’re anything like me, one step outside will probably drench you in sweat, so plan accordingly.

Baby powder. Powder yourself liberally after you’ve dried from your shower, you’ll stay a bit cooler. Take a bit of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and keep the inside of your nose and your lips moisturized. Remember that alcoholic drinks and caffeine dehydrate you…you want to drink LOTS of water. You won’t realize how much you’ve sweated until you keel over from heat stroke.

Leave your good jewelry at home.

You can have quite a bit of free fun by just watching the other tourists.

Beware of the buffets…casinos lose money on buffets, and they figure to make it up on gambling. The buffets often serve very nice food at very reasonable prices.

The only way to double your money in Las Vegas is to fold it over and put it back in your pocket.

Thanks for the responses. Glad I don’t have to knock the dust off the coat/tie side of the closet

A couple of pints of ether and your attorney.

SWIMSUIT! If you want to chill by the pool, which I recommend.

I would recommend pants with an elastic waistband to enjoy the buffets! They are so freaking yummy and totally worth it. Bellagio is my favorite although I’ve heard the one at the Wynn is better, but I’ve yet to try it.

Bring along one very nice sportscoat- just in case. You can wear it over your dockers/polo shirt. It also gets cold at night.

For underwear and even socks- COOLMAX!

We’re heading to Vegas next Tuesday. We’ll be staying at Manderlay Bay, and have tickets to “O” (Cirque du Soleil show at the Bellagio). Does anyone have any info on stuff to do around there that doesn’t involve gambling?

Dueling piano show in NYNY is quite nice, free (just buy a drink and sit down), also, the Imperial Palace has a great (free - get tickets at their slot club) antique car show, but hurry - Imperial is scheduled to be torn down in the next year or so. Also be sure to see the fountains at Bellagio - worth standing out front to watch a few of the shows and you can people watch at the same time. House of Blues in Mandalay Bay has a great gospel brunch on Sunday’s - order tickets in advance and there are two shows every Sunday morning. Also at Mandalay Bay is Shark Reef - a nice aquarium (get a local to buy you tickets and it will save you some bucks as there is a special for Nevada residents.) Other shows - I have only heard good things about LOVE, the new Cirque show at Mirage based on Beatles music, and I just saw La Reve at the Wynn Hotel and liked it quite a bit - (again, if you know a local they are offering half price tickets to NV residents for that show). The Rio has a cool Mardi Gras parade in the sky that is free - call for show times, but I think it is about every 90 minutes starting at about 3 or so in the afternoon. Hofbrau Haus, across the street from the Hard Rock, is fun - real German beer and food and oompah band - not a single slot machine in the building. For groups of 4(?) or more, they even offer a free shuttle to pick you up and drive you back to your hotel…and after a few large German beers, that is probably a wise idea. Lots of other things to do - just check out the copy of WHAT’S ON that most likely will be in your hotel room.

Speaking of Rio and the original OP regarding dress codes…if you go up to the VOODOO LOUNGE early, about 6ish, it is free entry but here is where the dress code applies - no jeans, no sneakers, collar shirts for men…I don’t think there is a dress code for women (you can probably go nude for all they care) but some of the clubs do require men to dress business casual.

Other than that, dress codes? Nah…you should see what people wear here - scary stuff. It is like people ransack their closets for clothes they bought while they were on crack and bring it here to wear.

Thanks for the help. I’m going to try to fit in a yoga class at least once as well.

Oh, then you will most certainly enjoy splurging a bit and going to Canyon Ranch Spa at the Venetian Hotel. That might be the high point of your trip.

If you don’t smoke, don’t be surprised if you reek of it at the end of the day.

Ugh, not looking forward to all the smoke. But, since I’m not a gambler and neither is my husband, I think we’ll probably avoid the casinos completely.
