He did the spay and neuter thing. Was that in his contract, or is it his cause as well?
You know you’ve grown up when you see Winnie the Pooh and think ‘Hundred acre wood? That’s not that big.’
I saw this thread title and thought it said “Drew Carey: RiP.”
What’s even worse, I started the damn thread.
I’m willing to give him some more time. I can’t imagine taking over this game show. New game shows are incredibly slow-paced next to it, and there’s a whole new set of hosting skills he’s got to pick up.
Actually, I thought they would cancel it when Bob dropped dead on stage one day. I’m surprised they didn’t cancel it when he retired, really. After all, who could possibly replace him? I still think Drew has potential, though he’s nowhere near there yet.
It probably generates too much revenue just to drop it.
Well, today, I got a double-dose. Saw Drew Carey on the Ellen Degeneres Show. I really don’t know him at all from any previous work, but he seems like a good guy. He said , when asked what advice Bob Barker gave on his taking over the show, “He said that I should make it my own, and not copy him. Although, that may have been a threat…” Apparently, he was really hunted down by CBS for the position, and was rather ambivalent about it.
Then, right on to the next hour of TPIR. With the aforementioned Plinko whupped up gal. Drew does seem a little awkward, as to be expected with such a rabid fan-based show. He’s not as “gentlemanly” as Barker, and the contestants don’t seem to want to Hug/Touch the Man, as they do with Bob, but Drew is decent with getting the contestants up onto the stage and happy. From what I saw, he could be a bit more gracious, but I guess his MO is to be a wiseass guy. It’s a rough spot to fill, to deal with folks who are batshit crazy about each little 3.99 tube of hemmoroid cream possibly leading to a NEW CAR!, so I’d give him some time to even it out.
I had the luxury of viewing all this today due to a knee injury, big brace on and stretched out in front of the ol’ tube set, and some pain meds kicking in. It just seemed fine to me, whee-hee!
For anyone who wants to watch:
Whole episodes are available online
I had trouble with yesterday’s debut episode, but today’s show streamed perfectly.
The success of the new shows incarnation is going to hinge on Drew’s ability to sink the putt on the Hole in One game.
Oh, crikey. Best laugh I’ve had all day.
Lucky for him, it’s really “Hole in One…Or Two!” Although he could miss the second putt as well.
I hate The Price is Right, but I love Drew Carey. I want him to stay with the show for a couple years, and then slide seamlessly into Conan O’Brien’s slot when he moves on to the Tonight Show. This is my dream…I doubt it will be realized.
Have you watched it lately? I just watched a late Barker episode and the studio looked ridiculously small. It only seats 350 people anyway.
I caught an Article that someone ( a long time fan of Barker’s Era) did when Barker’s eps were wrapping up… he said that the studio was real small, and put on with camera tricks, and what not.
So I guess bias IS there now, that I know that, but the camera IS in a different location now, for the audience shots.
bump
Took a mental health day today and decided to check this out.
He’s not bad. He’s a little hyper, but not obnoxiously so. I like the “is there anyone you want to say hi to” as they wait for the wheel to finish spinning – fills that time nicely and gives people a chance to say hi to … whoever. Some perople are more ready for the question than others – I’m guessing people will catch on to that.
They had the punch-board game – he got the woman to give a Chuck Norris yell as she punched each one. That was pretty funny.
I think he’ll work out for this.
I think some of the biggest problems are with the announcer and the remaining old sets. It was really jarring to see the new props, new host, and then have a treadmill rolled out with a beat up vintage 70’s looking set and some really bad fake plants.
Also, every once in a while Drew would try to play off the announcer a little, and the announcer was not on board. The whole interaction there seemed very awkward, which is a little sad. I think it would bring a nice fun dimension to the show if the announcer was someone Drew could bounce off of, and crack some jokes with.
I Tivoed a couple episodes (including the 2nd broadcast one with the incontinent Plinko lady), and I was as impressed with Carey as I was with Barker. Obviously Barker was a lot smoother and polished with all the games, but he had all those years to practice. I always liked Barker, but he seemed to have a bit of superior attitude towards the contestants. Carey seems like a good guy to have a beer (or 5) with.
I saw part of an episode last week, when my wife and I were in the doctor’s waiting room for her sonogram. I wasn’t too impressed with him, he seemed lethargic. Instead of “You could win…THIS!” (“A NEW CAR!!!” audience applause, excitement builds), he was like, “You could win this.”
Of course, he is new at it. I’m willing to allow some time for him to find a groove. But he doesn’t feel exciting to me, like Bob did.
I nominate Kathy Kinney. Pig.
The studio is pretty small; I’ve been there, though it’s been several years. I think just about all TV studios are smaller in person than they look on screen, judging from the few I’ve seen.
I don’t want to think about how ridiculously hard hosting this show must actually be. The pace, the insanity of the contestants (thanks, interviewing producer guy)…it’s taped in real time, unless there’s some sort of technical problem.
