Both my boss and my wife felt that my working today was more improtant than watching Drew Carey’s debut as the host of The Price is Right.
Was anyone luckier than me, and able to watch it? How’d he do? Did he make use of the long, skinny mic? Were there any new games or twists? Additional thoughts?
Drew used the long, skinny mic. He didn’t bow like Bob used to. Drew had a sense of humor: he poked fun at the announcers comment that “You’ll never be bored again with this pocket Sudoku game!” and jokingly stated that “Barker’s Bargain Bar” was named after the show’s founder, Ezikiel Barker. Plinko was not played, but Cliff Hangers was (Drew used the contestant’s nickname of “the Yodel Man” to refer to the mountain climber). This was not the first show Drew taped (that’ll air tomorrow), but this one was a perfect game- all six prizes were one, and both Showcase Showdowns ended in a dollar spin for a $1,000 prize.
The semi-retroness of the set was kept with some changes for the better: the “Donkey Kong” font used for the prize flash on the Showcase Showdown was replaced with a more fitting font using the stylized dollar sign in the show’s logo. Drew Carey reminds us to keep our pets spayed and neutered, and Rich Field now reminds us The Price is Right is a FremantleMedia production. (Although Mark Goodson Productions no longer exists, and he himself has been dead since 1992, the name was still used until the end of Bob’s run for nostalgia’s sake.) Although there were no elderly players, and I believe they are trying to skew for a younger audience, the advertising still featured products geared towards the elderly, including Alex Trebek for ColonialPenn insurance and Wilford Brimley for Liberty diabeetis medication.
Oh cool! Thanks for the tip. I wrote down the time and channel in my calendar, but I flaked out and missed the beginning; didn’t remember until the last game before the second Showcase. Loved the Ezekiel Barker bit.
I WILL NOT MISS tomorrow! This is so cool for Drew.
That kindof surprises me. He seemed extremely nervous and stiff to me. Not that I watch more than once every blue moon, so my opinion really doesn’t count for much, but I think he was a terrible choice; Chuck Wollery would’ve been much, much better. Drew is a comedian, not a game show host, and I think it shows.
I DVR’d it. And I never, ever, ever thought there would be a circumstance where I would DVR The Price is Right.
I wasn’t all that impressed with Drew…maybe it was the energy…he just wasn’t there yet. It didn’t help that I felt that the announcer was sucking the fun out of the room. He barely sounded enthused at all. As for Drew himself, it felt to me like he was playing catch-up the whole time. The contestant would start playing the game (which, granted, everyone knows how to play), and after the first…move…selection…whatever for the game, it’s like Drew remembered to explain the rules. He got better at it, but he seemed, at the start, more of an observer than a host. He’ll grow into it.
It was interesting, because comparisons are inevitable, and you simply cannot look good next to Bob Barker in that situation. I’ll check out tomorrow’s “first” show, but I’m certainly never going to watch it again.
For those of you who missed today’s episode, you can see it (and presumably future Drew episodes) at CBS.com. Go to “full episodes,” and then “The Price is Right.”
