Drew Carey. What's his appeal?

I never really liked Drew Carey when he was hot back when his series first kicked off, and now that his show is in heavy sindication on Fox I can’t avoid seeing it. I gotta say, I just don’t see what people see in this guy’s comedy. I mean, the guy tells the same joke over, and over, and over, and over, ad nauseum. That joke is “Hey, look at me guys. I’m fat and never get laid. I’m fat. Fat Fat Fat” His stand up routine is normally 75% self depreciating fat jokes. The supporting cast on his show is aweful too. I’ll bet there has never been a larger group of one trick ponies on one show in the history of TV.

I guess I am talking more about the TV show than him in particular, because I have only seen his stand up routine a few times, but it was the same every time.

Anyone on here like him or dislike him as much as I? Tell me why.

Personally, I like the show because it’s exactly like life hanging out with my friends. None of theis “very special” touchy-feely crap, not trying to teach me a lesson just having fun, making each other laugh. Innuendo, self-depreciation, bitching about the boss and that annoying co-worker, beer; I can relate to that.

I always thought Drew Carey’s appeal was he didn’t look like somebody famous-he just looks like a normal guy. Like my grandfather says, the kind of normal guy you talk to and have a couple beers with.

And the writing is hilarious. Drew and Mimi’s insult-trading never get old, Oswald and Lewis-two children trapped in grown men’s bodies-are funny, even Mr. Wick is funny. And sometimes, there’s a stroke of genius. They never did a “very special episode,” as jjtm pointed out, but they did do a hilarious parody of them around Emmy season one year.

Drew’s just a normal guy. That’s his appeal.

Plus he does creative stuff - musical episodes, improv, going to heaven, being inside a refrigerator.

And the writing is consistently sharp. The Drew Carey Show and Who’s Line Is It Anyway* are the two shows on TV that I make an effort to watch, and they are nearly always worth it.

Regards,
Shodan

I have to agree with Shodan, his TV shows are consistently creative [sub]if maybe a little corny as well[/sub]. The self depreciating humor is also a smart move, while some comics seem like jerks by making fun of others (Norm Macdonald for example), Drew is always a target of his own humor.

Plus he’s also oddly sexy. seriously.

BTW, Drew’s long gone past the I-never-get-laid stage. He’s had several girlfriends on the series, including one long term relationship, and has been married twice (once to Mr. Wick).

Yeah, what Shodan said!

Sadly, my husband HATES Who’s Line Is It Anyway?, so I never get to watch it.

Gotta agree with jjtm here. There’s a certain believability to Drew and his three friends hanging out, drinking beer all the time, in a lower-middle class neighborhood. It reminds me a lot of the crew I always hung around with.

Drew’s semi-autobiography is actually a very funny and down to earth read. I like Drew for all the reasons mentioned, and I think his show has one of the best ensemble casts on TV.

Damn, I guess I am alone on this one. I thought for sure other people so him the same way I did. I guess it’s the same thing with Seinfeld, most people love him, but some can’t stand him.

I love drew carey! Whose line is so funny! I HATED Seinfeld but at the time when it was popular, I was still living at home and mom 'n dad had control over the T.V. So I taught myself to bear it ,almost enjoy it. ( just to keep from shooting myself)

The thing about Drew Carey (at least on the show; I only know him from that) is that on the surface, he appears to be a schnook: overweight, brush cut, horn rims, 1950’s traveling salesman suits, and he’s from Cleveland. But the character (and, presumably, he himself, if he’s gotten this far) is totally alpha male and aggressive. He’s proof that the fat guy does not have to be a buffoon.

(I loved the one episode where Daffy Duck was applying for a job!)

The moment that really turned me around on the series was when Drew and his female sidekick were in a relationship together (I don’t think they are anymore but I only watch it in re-runs so i don’t know what the current status is). He wants kids but she doesn’t. A typical real life / sitcom scenario right? Well after discussing it and basicly coming to terms that this is a deal breaker for the relationship, Drew starts crying. AND IT WASN’T PLAYED FOR LAUGHS. I kept waiting for some punchline but it didn’t come. They actually had a man cry on a comedy and didn’t go for the joke. It was just an honest moment. From then on I defend the show because it is pretty funny but they can actually have some balls when it comes down to it.

I will NOT however defend Whose Line… It is SHIT SHIT and MORE Shit.

but I’m a improvisor so I’m jaded.

Kate got married and left the show. Drew is determined to find a woman and marry her on May 19, 2003 (I’m sure a contest or “very special episode” is planned for that date). A childhood friend (played by the incredibly hot Cynthia Watros) has returned and is living in Drew’s house. Currently, the relationship is platonic, but I’m sure that will change.

Haw haw look. The fat lady has a whole bunch of make-up on.
Yeah, that’s so-o-o-o creative.

re: Citizen Kane.

OMG how original… a movie about some guy’s life and events that occur therein. I’m sure that’ll go down in the history books.

The only appeal of that show to me was the presence of the very comely Christa Miller, who played Kate. Rowr!

(And who else is looking forward to the upcoming cheeck-fight between Christa Miller and Heather Locklear on “Scrubs”? Rowr again! )
