Drink 6 - 8 glasses of water a day

and you’ll never get anything done because you’re in the bathroom every 5 minutes.

So, I’m taking the bull by the horns and giving up my pretty serious addiction to Coke (Coca Cola, not the Dandruff of the Gods). Its part of a whole project I’ve got going on to see if I can reshape this body I’m walking around in (changed my diet pretty radically, increased the intensity of my workouts, signed up for soem pseudo-SEAL training offered by a former SEAL, etc.). I hear pretty consistently to drink 6 - 8 glass of water a day, so I go out and by a Brita filter pitcher and have been keeping it at my desk. There’s only one problem - I’m never at my desk because I’m in the bathroom every freaking five minutes.

A question for all of you hardcore water drinkers - how long does it take for your body to adjust to the new routine? Please tell me I’m not doomed to an eternity of standing in front of a urinal.

In the interest of fighting ignorance and all that…check out snopes on that idea

I’m still wondering myself about this water crap. I’m trying to wean off of diet coke and coffee…and I also…well…

Oh geez…let’s just say it…
I suffer from…severe…constipation. I poop…maybe…once a week. My doctor said MORE WATER MORE WATER MORE WATER!

Well, I’m peeing like nobody’s business, but the other business…ain’t budgin’.

Toxin’s schmoxins…I’m goin’ back to coffee.

I swear by it…otherwise maybe raisin bran et al…

Great link, beagledave. Yet more proof that Snopes is the cure for whatever ails ya.

I recall a Cathy cartoon where she said that obviously you’ll loose weight if you drink eight glasses of water a day–because you burn calories by running to the bathroom all the time. That’s certainly been my experience.

jarbabyj, caffeine can have a laxative effect, so, unless your doctor has specficially recommended against it, maybe you should go back to the coffee. (IANAD.)

When you just start drinking more water you Pee ALOT, but over time your body adjusts and things even out and you go your normal amount

beagle, believe me, I’ve been through the fiber therapy, the laxatives, the no dairy diet, I’ve taken Doqulace…nothin’, the blueberries, the ice cold water. I fear it reaches far back to a toddler trauma.

But know this: it sucks.

llamasex, I don’t know the first thing about you, but your name leads me to believe that I like the cut of your jib. Don’t prove me wrong…I beg you

As pure speculation…I’d say water is certainly good for you, it fills you up instead of eating junk food, just about cures a headache and is the best hangover preventative I’ve ever found. While it may not be the answer to your problems from a weight loss standpoint…it’s certainly got to be better than Coke!

Desperate times call for drastic measures then…

If that don’t work…snapping on my rubber glove —SNAP— this will hurt you more than it hurts me

sayyy…don’t be so sure, beagle…I’m a woman of strange proclivities…

I started being conscientious about how much water I drank about 3 years ago (and also gave up a caffeine habit). I was never concerned with toxins, but more interested in lookin’ good. When I drink at least the recommended amount, my skin is a whole lot clearer. As soon as I stop, it’s zits a-poppin’ for me. Back to the water again, and my skin clears up (and my hair will be less oily as well). It’s all about vanity with me, but drinking all that water is worth the effort.

My body adjusted to the change within a couple of months-- yours may do the same. Give it a try, anyway.

Just to follow up on what BEADLIN said:

I drink lots of water – two quarts in the morning, two quarts in the afternoon, not including whatever I have with meals. And, yes, it, um, cycles through me right on schedule. While I’m in the loo more than some others, I’m not in there “every five minutes” the way I was when I first started really pushing the water, so yes, it will get better.

It hasn’t helped me lose any weight – I’m pretty sure in my case any good effect it might have is counteracted by Cool Ranch Doritos – but I think it has other, really good results.

  1. My skin is much clearer (as BEADLIN said);
  2. I’m far less likely to get urinary tract infections, which I, like a lot of women, tended to get with depressing frequency;
  3. I have less trouble with my stomach (I have an ulcer), which my doctor attributes both to drinking more water and to drinking less Diet Coke; and
  4. I seem to suffer less from sinus problems and/or congestion in the winter, which I (totally unscientifically) attribute to keeping myself, well, “flushed out.” Ahem.

I think it’s done some really good things for me, so I recommend it. It couldn’t hurt, right?

Plnnr, your body adjusts in a few days. Your bladder will just hold more at a time. You’ll live. I’m an on-and-off coke fiend too. Usually cuts weight too, full belly.
Jarbaby - have Mr J come back around front more often. He’s been pushing it back up. And if you didn’t tell us you were constipated, I would never think you were full of shit.

About 6 weeks ago, I made a “lifestyle change.” I was living out of my car, eating fast food for every meal (between school and work I was never home to eat healthy) and hadn’t drank a real glass of water in months. Coincidentally, I also went pants shopping and realized I had moved up a size. I weighed myself and saw that I had gained 25 pounds (you’d think I would;ve noticed, but no). Another five pounds and I’m afraid I’d have a roll.

So I put my ass in gear: all I drink now is water, right out of the refrigerater dispenser. No fast food or junk food, just naturally healthy snacks. I work out every day for at least 30 minutes; for an hour to an hour and a half four times a week. The first two weeks of the diet (I hesitate to use that word, since I’m hoping this will be a change that will last), I dropped eleven pounds. I added in MetaboLife (3 pills a day, before meals) and have continued to lose 3-4 pounds a week.

Now, I’ve lost three inches from my waist, one from my bust, and two from my hips (my waist is the most tragic thing since Orpheus and Eurydice, and I really need to lose about 8 more inches to be happy). My skin has improved incredibly, I rarely crave chalupas or ice cream, and I’ve never felt better in my life.

I was hoping that might inspire some of you - 10 months ago I was a size 10, and somehow I managed to become a 16. Now I’m down to a 14 and have no doubt that I will be a 12 or even a 10 by summertime (I’d like to be an 8 eventually - I think my head would be too big for a 6 :)).

Anyway, to answer the OP question, I peed every half-hour for about a week or two. Then it slowed down considerably. I drink nothing but water now - usually 5-6 8oz glasses and 3 20oz glasses from my travel container - and I only go every hour and a half or so.

Best of luck, plnnr.

I don’t drink water. Coke is 99% water. I drink nocaffeine no calorie coke or pepsi or root beer. I don’t trust the water supply here & im not about to pay for bottled water that costs almost as much as soda.

pllnr - I drink 2-3 32oz glasses of water just at work every day. I only go to the bathroom 3 or 4 times a day usually, although some days it still seems like I need to go back to the bathroom as soon as I get settled back at my desk. Seems to have something to do with how boring my current task is!

jarbabyj - if you need to lose a little weight anyway, just have your doc put you on Orlistat for a month. That will get everything moving.

Jodi - check out Zyada’s method of almost completely eliminating UTIs without added sugar. Also, have you been checked for h. pylori? 80% of ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection.
