Driver/Setup for Inspiron 6000 panel

I can’t figure out quite how to do this:

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that works really well except for the built-in flat panel display. Somehow, I have lost the driver/settings/whatever for putting the display into 1920x1200 mode. As a result, I can only go up to 1600x1200 resolution/pixels, which doesn’t map correctly onto the panel’s aspect ratio. The result is a “spread-out” screen.

The GPU in this is the ATI Mobility Radeon X300. I have the ATI driver and control panel installed.

Part of this is my fault; I wiped out the hard drive when I got it and re-installed everything, but apparently failed to correctly installed the stuff for the flat panel.

I’m running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. If you need any other info, just ask.

Did you get the video driver from ATI or from Dell? If you got it from ATI try the Dell.

Double-checked this, and re-installed the Dell. Also removed a monitor driver that seemed to be getting in the way. This allowed me to go to the right aspect ratio.

So I basically fixed it, but this does bring up the craziness inherent in Windows architecture with one configuration. It just doesn’t work with a laptop. I use mine at home both with and without an attached monitor, and do the same at work as well!

In short, I have 3 different monitor configurations (work attached monitor, home attached monitor, laptop panel) and four different network configurations (wired and wireless work, wired and wireless home). To add to the pain, work has an NT domain network, but home (of course) does not, and some of my programs get psycho if I’m not logged in as the correct user/domain.

Computers suck.
