Driving anti-rant (courteous drivers)

Rants about annoying drivers are a staple around here. They’re fun, and they’re a good way to dump some frustration. But something different happened a couple of days ago…

I’m on a two-lane road with no room to pass. The guy in front of me turns on his left turn signal. sigh I’m going to end up slowing down from 70 (the speed limit) to 10 so he can turn into his driveway, because there’s no way to go around him on the right.

But wait! There’s no oncoming traffic, so he pulls over into the other lane to slow down, and makes his turn from there, allowing me to keep going without slowing down.

This actually happens fairly often around here, and it always makes me smile, so I decided to start a thread about courteous drivers for a change. What’s your best story?

I see it happen a decent amount of times. I don’t get riled up over crappy drivers, though. Stuff happens and I’m sure I’ve accidentally cut someone off once before. Others are allowed, too.

Good driving is full of little nuances, too numerous to attempt to list. It’s primarily paying attention to what you’re doing, trying to anticipate and staying alert to what’s going on around you. I try to be a courteous driver, even in the face of deliberate rudeness and I always try to give a wave of thanks to those who show me a courtesy. Being inside a car doesn’t excuse me from being a person. I get annoyed at people’s thoughtless behavior in the supermarket, but I would never curse them out, or flip them the bird, why would I do it in my car.

Understood. I was talking about things where it’s obvious somebody actually thought about what they were doing and went an extra step to be polite about it. It’s easy to get frosted at the guy who passes you on the shoulder at 80 MPH and flips you off when you’re going 57 in a 55 zone, but we sometimes forget to acknowledge the guy who pulls over to let you pass on a winding mountain road or the lady who stops to let you make a turn you’ve been waiting to make.
