We’re driving from Calgary, Alberta to Las Vegas the first two weeks of May - what should we try to see between here and there? Anybody done this trip? Any suggestions for places to stop for the night along the way? Anything to be wary of? What will the weather be like?
Oh, and most importantly, anybody want to meet us for a beer along the way?
Reno is a nice place to stop once you hit Nevada, it’s only about another 7 or 8 hours to Vegas from here (depending on how you drive, my friend from Vegas says he can make the drive in 5 and 1/2 hours, but it took me 7 hours doing 95 the whole way). There’s no shortage of places to stay here. I like to recommend the travel lodge at the Peppermill Casino. It’s not part of the casino/hotel melee, it’s another little adjacent hotel with very nice little rooms and an extremely decent price. Mr. Bunny’s mom stayed there once when she came to visit, and had nothing but good things to say about it (and she’s not exactly the easiest person to please, if you catch my drift ).
Stuff to see here: The Nevada Museum of Art; Lake Tahoe (particularly beautiful in May); Virginia City (stay overnight, if you can, I recommend the Comstock Lodge Motel if you want cozy, or the Silver Queen if you want historic, with paper-thin walls); the kayak park (might still be a bit cold for this in May, tho). Or, if you’re like me and Mr. Bunny and are more interested in good food and drink than outdoors-y stuff, I highly recommend Shenanigans English Pub (can’t beat their beer selection, and the food is startlingly good for bar fare), as well as The Roxy martini bar located in the El Dorado casino downtown, Nu Yalk Pizza (by the slice), Taste of India, Rapscallion’s (seafood and steakhouse), Super Burrito and the Truckee River Bar and Grille (great for breakfast).
Hope this is helpful!
And I forgot to add: it’s not our bag, but there’s tons of golf here, too. Folks here take their golf VERY seriously.
Thanks, NailBunny. We will probably look into the Peppermill Casino if it works out that we stop there (and it sounds like we might, if it is a day’s drive from Vegas). We’re more interested in a good night’s sleep than historic.
