Not sure if this is the right forum for this. Feel free to move it elsewhere. I have the Droid X phone. It’s my first smart phone and I must say I am loving it. It is funny how fast you get used to having the Internet at your fingertips from anywhere and the big screen allows me to actually type with my fat fingers.
So far the only areas that are less than great are:
The camera. The reviews prior to the release of the phone had a lot of nice things to say about the camera on it but I find that a. it is not easy to use. You have to play with the button to get to actually take a picture and b. the picture quality isn’t all that great. It may be I expected too much or even user error but kind of a disappointment.
Using it as a phone. I am sure a lot of this is just me needing to get used to something new but I found answering and making calls not the easiest experience. With my old phone, I could do thinks like flip it open and dial who I wanted with one hand easily. Here not so much
One of the “advantages” of an android phone is it can play Flash. Thus I found it amazing that when I went to a web site that required Flash and tapped to download, Adobe helpfully told me I couldn’t download the Flash player until I had Android v. 2.2. As far as I know 2.2 is not even released yet. The Droid X has 2.1. Yes, 2.2 is supposed to be out soon but it seems weird that Adobe jumped the gun and undercut what to many is a selling point to the OS.
Didn’t mean this to be a gripe session. I really do love the phone. Anyone else have one and want to share?
Well, I have the Droid, not the Droid X but I don’t have any problems with the camera on it. As a matter of fact, even though I still miss my old blackberry, I love how easy it is to share pictures on this phone.
I happen to hate, however, the battery life. In a typical day I will go through two or three batteries.
I just got my new Droid X yesterday. It’s my first smartphone as well, and I haven’t come close to figuring out how to do everything yet, but I already love it to pieces.
Any Android users want to recommend apps? Sleeps with Butterflies recommended Advanced Task Killer to help with battery life, and I’m tempted by Tapatalk to make forum reading and posting easier, but that’s all I’ve got so far.
There’s a free version of Tapatalk that lets you log in and read but not post. It’ll let you know if you want to consider the paid version. I have a different type of smartphone but I didn’t care for it at all. The regular version through the native browser works better for me.
DroidLife says 2.2 for DroidX may start deploying August 3. If you’re in a hurry, you can probably install it yourself if you root the phone. I believe there is a reliable rooting procedure available now.
I like the larger screen, but otherwise I prefer the HTC Incredible for a Verizon Android phone. The X has physical button on the face, and I don’t care for the calculator like design of the back.
Although someone’s figured out how to root the phone (I think there’s app you can download that lets you root and unroot with just a button click), that doesn’t get by the locked-down bootloader. To my knowledge, there isn’t a way around that yet.
The tech at the Verizon store installed Advance Task Killer for me but I had heard of it and planned to get it anyway. He also installed the Dolphin Browser, telling me it was better than the default one and after using it for a few weeks, he was probably right. At the very least it allows the use of tabs which the default one doesn’t.
Other than that I would recommend several of Google’s apps: Earth, Goggles, Sky view. I did a search on this board for Android apps and several of those suggestions were good too.
The battery life is very good. I have the GPS turned off which conserves the battery but even with quite a bit of internet browsing during the day, the lowest my battery has gotten by bedtime was 30%. Most of the time is it at around 50%.
I’ve got an HTC EVO, which is practically the Droid X. I’ve had it almost two weeks now and I love it.
I agree with you and the phone calls, to an extent. It’s not AS easy to make a call as on a BlackBerry (my previous phone), but it’s not hard either. However, you can voice dial things, so that makes up for it.

Can someone with a Droid X and a Google account try something for me? Please see if you can edit a Google Docs document in the browser. I’m interested in the word processor type document, not the spreadsheet.
I’ve had my Droid X for about two weeks now (bought it on July 15th). I’ve found that if I just let the Droid X sit waiting for phone calls (with WIFI, Bluetooth, and GPS turned off) like my old dumb phone used to then the battery lasts three days. If I spend the day playing with it, the battery lasts one full day.
Playing a rounf of golf with the GPS unit on and in constant use for four hours (I use the SkyDroid golf GPS app) I use up roughly half of a battery charge.
I have never used Google docs before but I gave it a shot and Goggle docs came up and I saw a way that looked like I could open something if I had something already saved but I didn’t see any way of creating a new document.
