The prosecutor’s office has apparently stated that they are investigating whether it was a racially-motivated hate crime.
There are also unconfirmed reports that the victim was transgendered, and that that may have figured into the motive for the attack, but the authorities may have denied that. It doesn’t sound like we have much solid information.
