drug tests... am I screwed?

Ok, so last nite, I was walking into work and as I was walking aroung the corner of the building, I turned my ankle on some landscaping gravel that was on the sidewalk, fall down go boom. Ankle’s fine, thanks.

It was just a minor strain, but I figured I should fill in an injury report in case it started to hurt later in the night after I had been standing on it, and I wanted to have a doctor look at it ( I could have put it off until tomorrow, which is now today, but I wanted to make sure workman’s comp would cover any potential doctor’s visit)

After I had been on the game for about an hour, I was coming back from break, and my pit boss stops me from taking out the stickman. He sends me over to talk to the shift boss, who sends me to the security office, where I was interrogated, made to fill out a bunch of paperwork, and then had my butt hauled to a medical center for a drug test and to have the ankle looked at. (I could have refused the drug test, but I would have been suspended pending an investigation of the accident, and possibly even terminated. Plus I’m really broke at the moment and couldn’t afford the time off work)

So, I pissed in a cup and had blood drawn. The results should be back in 24-36 hours.

The thing I’m worried about is, I have chronic back problems. For the last week or so, it’s been flaring up pretty bad. My mother has hydrocodone, which is a prescription painkiller that contains codeine, left over from when she had some dental work done, and I have been known to swipe one on occasion. Over the past few days, I’ve maybe taken three or four of them. I only take one if I’m in so much pain that I won’t be able to sleep, which means right before I go to bed.

I can’t remember if I took one yesterday morning before I turned in, but I don’t think I did. If I did, it would have been a good sixteen hours before I went in for the piss test. It’s more likely that the last one I took was thirty-six hours before the test.

I mentioned to the security guard that drove me to the clinic that I was taking the a prescription that contained codeine (didn’t mention that it wasn’t my prescription) and said I was concerned that it would show up as an illegal opiate. She said, no, they’d know if it was a prescription med, and they’re looking for illegal stuff like marijuana, cocaine, stuff like that.
I’m pretty sure the blood test would prove that I wasn’t under the influence at the time of the accident, so that might be in my favor.

Basically what I’m wondering is, if the hydrocodone shows up on the test, would they just assume I had a prescription and declare me clean? Or would I be required to produce proof that the medication was prescribed for me? The Human Resources office doesn’t open up until Monday morning, so I can’t make an anonymous call and find out what company policy is.

And does anybody have any info or know a website where I could find out how long the metabolites would stay in my system?

(note to self- do not borrow other people’s prescription medications)

By the way, when I came back to work from the medical clinic, the gravel I had tripped on was still there. Security knew it was there, and nobody was sent to clean it up. So now it’s waiting for some little old lady to come break a hip on it…

I e-mailed you a reply to this. One other suggestion I have is this. IF you get back a positive test, you likely have the right to request a re-test. I would personally do that. (well, I won’t personally give you the test, but personally I would request a new test)

Hydrocodone takes 2-4 days to metabolize. When a drug test comes up positive it is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) who will ask you if there is a valid reason to test postive. You will need a valid script or a DR.'s explanation in order for it to be OK. You may not be totally screwed yet if you go to your Dr.BEFORE THE TEST RESULTS COME BACK WHICH WILL TAKE ABOUT 3 DAYS and level with him/her. Say you were having some pain, took your Mom’s pills and it helped. Also tell Dr. about the drug test. Unless you are a total screw up, most Dr.'s will write you a note to the effect that you are under their care, etc… You will probably have to get a little ass chewing about taking someone else’s pills but just take it and say thank you. You can say you hadn’t come earlier cause you thought it was just a temporary problem and that you didn’t want to waste the Dr.'s time on what you thought was a minor problem. Which is the absolute truth.

BTW I’m an RN who is now in a whole world of shit about smoking a joint or two on the weekend, got injured at work 5 days later, piss tested, suspended, harrassed and ultimately fired. I don’t drink or smoke and only smoked pot occasionally, Never at or before work, I always took my job seriously. Now I can’t work cause my license may be suspended and I can’t draw unemployment cause “I was fired as a direct result of my own actions” I was promised that I would not be fired if I went into rehab, which I did and the counselers said they didn’t know why I was there. I was forced to go to Narcotic Anonymous, and was told it was inappropriate for me to be there because I never used narcotics. AA didn’t want me either. Is this f’d up or what? Sorry to get so far off the OP but as you can probably tell, I’m still hurting pretty bad. But I’ve got me a really smart and pretty damn mean lawyer who just might be able to help me. (I hope) Really all I want is to be able to get back to work and not have my license muddied up.

http://www.marijuana.com has a really good site with info on how long many drugs take to clear the system and lots of other useful information.

Mojo-

Well, I went to a Quick Care clinic before I saw your post, didn’t tell the doc about the drug test, but did get a valid script for the hydrocodone. Trouble is, it’s dated the day after the accident, which may mean trouble. I think I might just claim what I was taking was left over from an old script, and I’ve recently changed doctors, or something.

I’m not in the medical profession, or in a safety-sensitive position, so I’m hoping that it won’t be brought up for review. I may call my own doctor tomorrow, and see if I can get him to write me a note…

OK, now I’m pissed.

I’m pretty sure I’m out of the woods. My drug test results would be back by now and so far nobody’s asked me to provide proof that I had a prescription for the hydrocodone.

Last week I got a letter from another casino asking me to come in for a drug test. I blew it off but kept the letter. I called today and went ahead and scheduled the drug test, just so I would have a back door in case they demand a prescription. (don’t worry, I’ll test clean)

Here’s the kicker. Tokes for Saturday night, when I turned my ankle went $121. I got $48. I think they deducted the time I spent doing the piss test and sitting in the Dr.'s office waiting to have my ankle looked at from my tokes for the night.

It isn’t my fault the maintainence people don’t keep the sidwalks adjoinding the building swept up. I had told the shift boss my ankle wasn’t hurt that bad, it was just a little sore and I was ok to work. They’re the ones who insisted that I be subjected to the indignity of a piss test and a two hour wait at the clinic to have the damn ankle looked at. I should have gotten full tokes for the night. If they don’t give me the rest of my money, I may bail.
