Dry mouth from toothpaste?

I’ve always had this problem, ever since I was a kid. I think it might be the peppermint flavour or something. Multiple brands have been tried, but my mouth is still dry for hours and hours after a brushing. It’s not a lack of water, it’s just like a very, very long after taste. Does anybody else get this problem? Is there a simple solution that’s obvious to people in the know?

I suggest Biotene toothpaste. It’s made for drymouth and it doesn’t contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can cause problems with those with Dry Mouth.

Check the kiddie toothpaste rack for dentrifices that don’t have Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. I use ones from Zooth. Unfortunately, they don’t come in mint; apple, grape, and bubble gum. Eh, you get used to it.

May I suggest that it could be the fluoride?
I opened a thread some time back about how the extra fluoride gels & rinses the dentist gives me makes my mouth very dry and me very thirsty. Regular toothpaste does this too, but nowhere to the level that the EXTRA fluoride gels do. Also, non-fluoridated toothpaste doesn’t do this, leading me to believe it’s the fluoride. Just a theory, though.

All of the above, Lurker - could be any of the commonly added tothpaste chemicals reacting idiosyncratically with your personal spit. I find I get cold sores in spades if I use toothpaste with SLS; extra fluoride hasn’t bugged me yet that I’ve noticed, though it’s hard to find such stuff without SLS too. YMMV.

If the other excellent suggested alternatives above don’t work for you, try a little plain baking soda sprinkled on your damp toothbrush; if that still dries you out, try table salt in the same way. This could help you narrow down the culprits. Hippie groceries (aka “natural foods stores”) often stock alternatives, one of which might be just the thing for you. Read labels! and good luck -
