Hi all,
I just moved to San Jose. I want to set up high speed internet access. Does anyone have a recommendation or (more likely) a horror story?
Thanks!
Hi all,
I just moved to San Jose. I want to set up high speed internet access. Does anyone have a recommendation or (more likely) a horror story?
Thanks!
I live in Willow Glen and when we had DSL (PacBell) installed, the installer-guy (?) didn’t know how to both of our computers (one upstairs, on downstairs…my husband ended up doing it) but other than that, everything is fine.
Oh, we paid more for the faster service but never once got that speed. My husband called to change to the slower service (just to save money really) and they gave us a rebate on the price difference for the whole time we’ve had DSL. Pretty nice if you ask me!
I think there are a few different companies that provide DSL, so you may want to shop around.
Good luck, and let’s get together for a Dopefest! Maybe when ruadh comes into town!
For a hundred bucks or so you can get a decent DSL modem at Ebay.com
There is a newsgroup, ba.internet that discusses bay area internet topics like this.
Welcome to town! Just in time to see all the jobs evaporate, but not soon enough to see home prices drop below astronomical!
Still the center of civilization say I. Except for DSL; that’s as bad as it is anywhere. If you’re lucky enough to live close to a Pac Bell Central Office, you can get it, but outside that you’ll have to get DSL from someone else or even move down to iDSL (again from someone else). And if that someone else relied on a carrier that went out of business (many relied on NorthPoint), then you dealt with severe interuptions. And if they switched from NorthPoint to another carrier which will go out of business (many switched to Covad), you’re now ready for more severe interuptions. Many people I know, myself included are going through this nonsense.
Sure beats Dial up, though.
Giraffe,
I recommend Qwest. It runs on the same line as my phone line(I can still use the phone) and pay one single bill for both my phone and DSL.
I have their basic service and it is very fast(appx 700kbs).
I didn’t get DSL because my line had some bridges only it & the phone comp wanted 200 bucks to take them off, which is dumb.
Its been sometime since someone asked about DSL but in that time there is new technology.
e.g. You can get two way satellite modems now. They are real cool! Hughes.com makes them. Its like $20 per month for 25 hours or twice that for all the hours you want for a one way modem, more for two way ones. Use them anywhere.
Thanks for the responses. I need to call Pac Bell and see if they can provide DSL here. I’ll also check out Qwest.
The ba.internet newsgroup was exactly the sort of resource I’m looking for. Thanks, handy!
